‘Marix Ecology’ 4×4 Retread Range Offers Savings Potential
According to Marangoni, its Marix range for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles has proven a popular choice for off-road drivers thanks to a series of products designed for extreme use, such as Lion and Puma. Both of these tyres feature substantial tread blocks, and for this reason are sought by those who use their 4x4 for work or in sporting competitions, and want a tyre with good grip and drainage capacity. The latest additions to the Marix 2008 range are the Cruise and Ghepard, the latter a high performance tyre for SUVs that is approved for high performance and available in 17 and 18-inch sizes. Marangoni says the Ghepard ensures comfort and maximum grip in all conditions thanks to the use of high performance compounds.

In its Ringtread treads the Marangoni Group has a product that has been effectively developed since its introduction in the 1970s. When the Italian tread manufacturer and retreader took over Germany’s Ellerbrock GmbH in 1990, the share of total production dedicated to Ringtread production was no more than 20 per cent. Today global share has grown to around 50 per cent; Ringtreads are manufactured in Ferentino, Italy, at Ellerbrock in Germany, in Nashville, USA, and in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Presently in Europe around 55 per cent of treads sold by the Marangoni Group are Ringtreads. And, according to Guiseppe Ferrari, managing director of Marangoni’s Retreading Systems business unit, a still higher European market share is possible.

Retread manufacturing equipment and garage supply specialist Italmatic Srl may be based in Italy, but the company has long established global intentions. In addition to the Italian headquarters, a far eastern wing (50:50 joint venture, Italmatic Asia) was founded in Singapore in 1984 and the company also has a network of offices in the USA and the UK. Now, 40 years since the company produced its first buffing machines, the goal is to serve customers throughout Europe, Asia and North America with „full technological, training and marketing support.”

India’s Tyresoles Pvt Ltd has become the latest international retreader to join the Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau (TRIB), bringing TRIB’s membership to nearly 500 members in 50 countries. The company states it is India’s largest retreading company and has maintained a presence in India since 1947. Tyresoles used both the mould cure and precure processes to retread more than 120,000 tyres per annum. The retreader operates a network incorporating more than 150 dealers in several regions of India.

A new facility owned by the Kazakhstan Rubber Recycling company has become the Central Asian country’s first end of life tyre recycling plant to enter operation. The facility, located in the capital city of Astana, is equipped with machinery built by Germany’s MeWa Recycling Maschinen und Anlagenbau and holds a capacity of around 11,000 car and truck tyres per annum.

Chem-Trend, a global manufacturer of release agents and other process chemical specialties, has announced the launch of Mono-Lube 1111, a new high performance tyre-curing bladder treatment for the tyre manufacturing industry. Chem-Trend states that initial field tests have shown that tyre-curing bladders coated with Mono-Lube 1111 can extend bladder life up to 40 per cent. Mono-Lube 1111 cures in one hour at room temperature and provides similar performance to coatings that are baked onto the surface of a curing bladder. It can be applied by various methods including brush, sponge or spray application. The new product is the latest addition to the Mono-Lube family of products for the tyre manufacturing industry. Chem-Trend’s full line of products includes inside tyre paints, outside tyre paints, curing bladder coatings and the Mono-Coat brand of tyre mould treatments.

Goodyear Dunlop is to distribute new Goodyear Max Technology and Dunlop tyres through Bandvulc Group in a move designed to increase efficient and improve delivery service to UK truck tyre dealers. According to the tyre manufacturer, the agreement means that Bandvulc Group, which specializes in truck tyre service solutions, will now be able to supply Goodyear and Dunlop truck tyres to independent dealers across the UK. The partnership is intended to complement Goodyear Dunlop’s existing direct delivery logistics system, which is designed to supply large tyre dealers and the growing network of TruckForce partners across the UK by shipping volume orders of tyres directly from plants (such as Wittlich in Germany, Luxembourg and Wolverhampton) to customers.

Freightliner, the UK’s largest haulier of maritime containers has extended its commercial tyre agreement with Bandvulc Tyre Contracts. Freightliner operates a fleet of over 300 road vehicles, for final delivery and collection of containers from customer’s premises. Using Bandvulc retreads across all of its drive and trailer axles, the agreement sees Bandvulc collecting and managing all of their tyres and disposing of them within environmental guidelines. Richard Branston, general manager Road and Port Operations for Freightliner comments; “Bandvulc has been involved with Freightliner for over 10 years and the processes we have developed in conjunction with BTC have helped us control and manage our tyre policy effectively and recent developments have seen us extend this relationship further. The management and control of a nationwide operation required a comprehensive set of partners to work with and BTC’s network enabled service delivery 24/7/365 in all areas of the UK.”

According to Shanghai based research company China Research and Intelligence (CRI), increased vehicle numbers are causing scrap tyre levels in China to grow at a rate of 10 to 20 per cent per annum. Last year, CRI reports, more than 200 million tyres in China reached the end of their useful lifespan, yet only 11.5 million were retreaded.

Michelin’s Stoke on Trent facility is to halt production for 15 days between February and April, resulting in employees working nine less shifts within this time period. Employees will be required to work five of these shifts at a later date, and will receive 50 per cent pay for the remaining four cancelled shifts. The dates for the shutdown of the company’s Remix truck tyre lines are reported to be February 21 to March 2 and between April 9 and 15.

Raw material price increases affect every part of the tyre production and distribution chain. At the moment all the new tyre manufacturers (from the largest to the smallest) are feeling the raw materials pinch, which has been reflected in a run of less profitable financial reports. Even the Chinese manufacturers that were able to offer the “economic option” for so long are being forced to restructure their prices. Prior to this the low price of new Chinese made truck and bus radials had been hindering sales of quality retreads, so now that the price differential appears to swinging back against the Far Eastern budget producers, will this provide the opportunity for a resurgence in retread sales? Take Qingdao, Shandong province-based Aufine Group Co Ltd. In August Tyres & Accessories received notification that the company was bringing in a second “unfortunate” price increase in three months, brought on by the “not small” (23 per cent) increase in Aufine’s natural rubber costs. The fact that the Chinese government clamped down on production in regions adjacent to Qingdao during the last quarter has also affected the distribution of these products. Furthermore, in addition to pressures mentioned above, the supply of Chinese tyres is also described as “inconsistent” since the pound’s value has fallen against the Euro. As a result Chinese manufacturers are increasingly ‘cherry-picking’ sales in the most lucrative international markets.

More than any other company in the world it is Michelin that – at an early stage – began to produce retreaded truck tyres as part of its industrial operations, and has always understood retreading as an integral part of its new tyre business and incorporated it into all its industrial and marketing activities. The French corporation not only operates its Remix mould-cure production and cooperates with its pre-cure retreading partners across Europe; in the area of retreading Michelin is building on yet another cornerstone - the Laurent group, with its two production sites in Avallon, France, and Berlin, Germany. It is in particular the latter, the smaller location in terms of output, that plays a pivotal role in the ever-important Western and central Europe markets.
