Marangoni aims to make European retreading more competitive
Compared with producing a new tyre, retreading saves up to 30 per cent in energy and 70 per cent in raw materials. Retreading also lowers overall cost per kilometre, but despite these benefits the European retreading market has been hampered by a scarcity of the industry’s main raw material – good quality, retreadable casings – and by the availability of new imported tyres whose casing quality is not sufficient for retreading.
Continue ReadingEurope is Vipal’s fastest growing market
When Vipal opened up European sales offices in 2005, the Brazilian retreading materials supplier was just starting out in the collection of disparate markets that make up the continent. Now European sales make up nearly 15 per cent of the company’s global turnover. With this in mind and with growth still top of the agenda, Tyres & Accessories asked Vipal Europe general manager Alessandro Bottesini Campos how this happened and what is happening next.

A point of difference between the introduction of Goodyear’s new Kmax and Fuelmax truck tyre lines and that of previous generation tyres is that retreaded versions of the Kmax and Fuelmax will be available from day one. “In the past we made a clear division,” notes Rupert Kohaupt, Goodyear Dunlop’s commercial vehicle tyre sales director for emerging markets. “We introduced a new product and took the approach that the demand for retread versions of the range would first come when the tyres were worn. We would wait a year or 18 months before introducing the retread version into the market.”

The fact that Matteuzzi Srl has always been focused on international markets means that the company has no fear of the current financial crisis. Today, with communications even easier thanks to the internet, the Bologna-based company exports 95 per cent of its production and offers customers an English-language website.

Since the company’s founding in 1953, Cima Impianti has specialised in the manufacture of retreading machinery and facilities. A particular focus has been vulcanisation presses and moulds for mould cure retreading; a specific product portfolio that Cima Impianti, with a touch of pride, refers to as the “most extensive in the industry.” Building upon this position, which the company has earned within the industry over a number of years, the Pistoia (near Florence, in Italy’s Tuscany region) based firm has pursued a new path over the past five years and invested heavily in developing machinery for OTR tyre retreading. Along with vulcanisation presses for the retreading of up to 63-inch tyres, Cima Impianti currently also supplies five-axis CNC buffing machines for giant tyres and extruders for OTR tyre retreading.

Continue ReadingShearography: An economically successful investment
These days, two major trends within the European retreading sector are making the use of shearography systems increasingly necessary. First, casings are becoming harder to source due to weakness in the new tyre market and the growth in new tyre manufacturers’ involvement in retreading; they strive to retain ‘their’ casings within their own systems. Second, the focus on quality amongst medium-sized retreaders is becoming ever more important – both customers and the business’s competitive environment demand this. In an interview with Tyres & Accessories, market leader Steinbichler challenges those retreaders who continue to believe they can’t afford investments of 100,000 euros or higher: “For each of our customers, an investment in shearography has been crowned with economic success.”
