A total of 47.7 million truck tyres are retreaded around the world each year. Pre-cure retreading accounts for 77 per cent of this figure.

The Bandag operation in Australia reports its receipt of an Environmental Innovation award at this year’s Queensland Bus Industry Council (QBIC) annual conference. The QBIC bestowed this honour upon Bandag Manufacturing Pty Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bridgestone Australia, in recognition of its investment in green initiatives. We often witness that small and medium-sized retreaders cope much better with the market’s cyclical nature and with any changes in market structure that inevitably occur if they can reply upon a stable distribution network. A good example of this can be seen in Germany’s Remo Reifen GmbH Erneuerungswerk, a firm that considers itself a “typical pre-cure retreader.” When Tyres & Accessories recently spoke to company owner and managing director Roland Stecher, the 41-year industry veteran stressed that long-term business relationships have a positive influence on quality levels and enable a greater degree of flexibility – two factors that help companies in Europe stand firm against price-aggressive competition from the Far East.

On 31 March, Ruud Spuijbroek stepped down as secretary general of Vaco, the organisation representing the tyre and wheel industry in the Netherlands. Spuijbroek had served as general secretary for close to 20 years, and although he no longer holds the top position at Vaco the 63 year old remains secretary general of European retreading association Bipaver. A successor to Spuijbroek was named at Vaco’s general assembly in December 2014, and on 1 April Tim van der Rijken took over as the association’s secretary general.

Retreading has begun at the facility set up by Marangoni and Russia’s Tatneft Group in Nizhnekamsk, Tartarstan. Marangoni informed Tyres & Accessories that the first all-steel truck tyres were retreaded by KaMaRetread LLC – a joint venture between Marangoni and Tatneft subsidiary Trading House Kama LLC – in March. Marangoni provided technical assistance prior to the start of production.

Marangoni S.p.A. has acquired a 25 per cent share in South Africa’s Leader Rubber Co. S.A., the Italian company reports. It describes the signing of an agreement to this effect as the “culmination of a partnership that has been ongoing for several years,” and says the objective of taking a 25 per cent shareholding is to strengthen both companies’ presence in the South African market and throughout Africa.

India’s Elgi Rubber Co. Ltd has acquired US retreading equipment manufacturer American Equipment Manufacturing Inc., a firm better known in the market as Cincinnati Retreading/Reclamation Systems; CRS was established in 1975 as a division of American Equipment Manufacturing. The Aztec (New Mexico) headquartered firm is primarily known for its buffing machines, which are produced in the CRS factory in Fairfield (Ohio). According to media reports, Elgi Rubber intends to further expand the facility.

Executives at Pelmar Engineering Group (Pelmar) have confirmed that a disagreement between the company and Tianjin Saixiang Technology Co. Ltd. (TST) has been resolved. Pelmar’s executive chairman Jacob Peled told Tyres & Accessories that “the conflict between TST and Pelmar has ended in an amicable settlement”. The resolution appears to have occurred after TST met its obligations towards Pelmar. As a result Pelmar cancelled the lawsuit it brought against TST in the Tianjin Court. In addition, it was also agreed that the two companies will resume their business relations and will continue to cooperate as before.
