Marangoni deploys new compound system in Rovereto
A new compounding system will be installed at Marangoni’s plant in Rovereto, Italy. The retreading company says it is continually investing in technologies to meet the demand for improved compounds for the evolving tyre market, including advances for dosing, handling, management and checking of raw materials.

Last Friday, friends and colleagues from the industry bade farewell to Ruud Spuijbroek, the “long-time helmsman” of European retreading association BIPAVER and secretary general of Dutch association VACO as he retired from his duties. At a valediction event in the town of Gernsbach, in Germany’s Black Forest, his successor at BIPAVER, Tim van der Rijken, and Hans-Jürgen Drechsler, technical secretary of the European association and managing director of German association BRV, acknowledged one last time Spuijbroek’s contribution to retreading in Europe.

Continental has begun making ContiTread pre-cure tread rubber in the USA. A new pre-cured tread manufacturing facility at the tyre maker’s Mound Vernon plant in Illinois has commenced production of the tread compound, and Continental anticipates that the facility will reach full operation by the end of the first quarter of 2018.

Colmec is undoubtedly one of Europe’s largest retreaders. With annual production exceeding 150,000 retreaded truck tyres, the company is a market leader in Sweden – the company’s home market – and also active in Poland, Norway and Finland. The company’s full-offer concept has evolved over the years and now includes mould cure retreads, which are sold in the above four markets under the Colmec EcoTire brand name. As we learned from company owner Peter Eckerström and his management team during a visit to the Colmec retreading facility in Poland, which was recently expanded in collaboration with Kraiburg Austria, further changes are also on the way, including a potential entry into the large German market.

Italian retread equipment manufacturer TRM has developed a new line of automated retreading equipment for the US market and signed an agreement with Shamrock Marketing, Inc. of Louisville Kentucky to be the authorized dealer. The new line, called “Latitude”, is built around a robotic style buffing machine that is designed to minimize process time, cut labour, and increase consistency in buff texture. The equipment line will be officially launched in March 2018 during the Mid-American-Truck-Show in Louisville, KY with live demonstrations at Shamrock’s facility.

B&J Rocket says it always has an eye on the legal requirements that exist in different countries regarding workplace health and safety. In order to better meet these regulations, the company has changed its buffing blade packaging unit and decreased the weight of its packaging boxes by 10 kilogrammes. Boxes containing 30 sets (formerly 50 sets/25 kg) now weigh only 15 kilogrammes and are thus much better suited to the actual load limits applied to the lifting and carrying of occasional loads.

Lincolnshire-based Vacu-Lug Traction Tyres Limited was been fined £300,000 on 15 September after a worker died when the fork lift truck he was driving overturned at the company Grantham headquarters three years earlier. Lincoln Crown Court heard the worker was transporting tyres on 30 July 2014 when the fork lift ran over a loose tyre in the road. He was crushed between the fork lift truck and the ground and later died from his injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Paisley based Caledonian Tyres has unveiled a £250,000 refurbishment, which aims to position it as one of the most advanced retread tyre centres in the country. One of the Bandag network’s largest franchise partners, Caledonian Tyres’ development of its facility features improved factory facilities, new look offices, improved equipment and an eye-catching rebrand of the entire premises. The company states that the investment underlines the strength of the commercial retread tyre market, and follows investments made at Lincolnshire-based Bulldog, another large Bandag franchise.

Harvey Brodsky, the former managing director of TRIB and founder of RTA, died on 17 September following complication from lung cancer. Brodsky had been diagnosed in March and given two to three weeks to live, but fought the illness for another six months.

The inaugural The Tire Cologne in May 2018 is to offer a platform for the retreading and recycling industry in addition to the 19 leading tyremakers that have already been announced. According to the organisers, Koelnmesse and Bundesverband Reifenhandel & Vulkaniseur-Handwerk e.V. (the BRV/german tyre retailers and vulcanisation trade association), these themes have not been given the due attention in the past.
