Yet another crossover is entering the vehicle parc in the shape of the Alfa Romeo Tonale, which in UK spec is exclusively available as a mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid model. Continental has announced being one of the tyre suppliers for versions equipped with 17- and 18-inch rims. It will ship Continental EcoContact 6 tyres to Alfa Romeo’s Pomigliano d’Arco plant in Naples, Italy, where they will be fitted to the Tonale in sizes 215/60 R 17 96V and 235/50 R 18 97V.

A tyre with a tread enhanced with single wall carbon nanotubes was exposed to accelerated wear and handling simulation tests by Akron Rubber Development Laboratory. Analysis of captured airborne particles showed no free-standing nanotubes, according to Luxembourg-based OCSiAl, which produces carbon nanotubes.

While most tyre manufacturers are evolving their approach to building ranges of electric vehicle tyres, with specialism not always the preferred route, a small number of tyre-makers were quick off the mark with new product lines. Korean manufacturer Kumho was one of the small number to bring an all-new product to the electric vehicle replacement tyre market, entering the burgeoning segment in 2016 with the Wattrun VS31. The tyre garnered several accolades for pioneering design work, including both the prestigious German Red Dot Design Award and American Green Good Design award. Now Kumho’s strategy is to bring its EV line more directly into alignment with its existing passenger car tyre brands; the Wattrun VS31 pattern has now been superseded by the Ecsta PS71 EV, the company’s next generation electric vehicle tyre.

MXGP riders on Dunlop tyres continued their run of success in 2023 with victories in MXGP, MX2 and WMX at Arnhem in The Netherlands. Romain Febvre took his sixth overall FIM Motocross World Championship victory of the season with a second and first place finish in the two Sunday races. Over the weekend, riders used Dunlop’s latest Geomax MX34 front and Geomax MX14 rear tyre to handle the soft, sandy surface of the Arnhem track. Dunlop works with some of the fastest motocross riders to develop the next generation of motocross tyres. Wim Van Achter, motorsport manager, Dunlop, said the riders’ success “demonstrates the performance and quality of Dunlop’s motocross range.”
