It is now two years since Starco’s solid tyre factory in Sri Lanka entered operation. The first product line manufactured there was the premium Tusker range, and this was joined by the Unicorn standard line-up this year. Starco reports that the complete Unicorn range is now in stock within its Central Warehouse in Germany and available for next-day delivery to many locations.

Choice of product is key – Pirelli previews its tyres and fleet solutions
Heading up to the first anniversary of the European tyre label’s implementation, Tyres & Accessories took the opportunity to ask about tyre manufacturers’ label experiences with commercial fleet operators. From Chris Evans, director of Pirelli’s UK and Ireland Truck business unit, we learned that fleet reactions to the label have been mixed. “It’s a good tool to help end users collect essential information when choosing new tyres,” he relates. “But fleets recognise the tyre label cannot substitute the wide range of information offered by the manufacturers and service providers which detail many of the other facets of a truck tyre, such as mileage and retreadability. Often a fleet will prefer to test in real time, usually back-to-back with competitor or traditional products to see true performances in their own environment.

DAF trucks first to get Goodyear Kmax and Fuelmax tyres as standard
DAF has become the first truck manufacturer to offer Goodyear Kmax and Fuelmax tyres as standard original equipment. The new tyres will be supplied on the company’s brand new CF and LF models as well as its flagship XF range as of December 2013. The Goodyear Kmax and Fuelmax ranges were introduced in September. Kmax, as the name implies, has been developed for high mileage performance, while not compromising on other important criteria such as fuel efficiency and traction. Likewise the Goodyear Fuelmax range is for the operator who wants optimised fuel efficiency combined with good mileage.

UK firm develops temperature-sensitive tyre that changes colour
A Wiltshire-based rubber research and development specialist is working with Canadian Tire to develop a tyre that changes colour when winter tyres are needed. The retailer approached Artis, the firm created as a result of the reorganisation of Avon Rubber in 2007, and tasked the Melksham company to develop such a product. It has now produced a concept tyre featuring a sidewall that changes from white to a vivid blue at 7°C.

Corp. says its improved casing warranty for its medium TBR range sees the casing value increasing to US$110 for the first retread on many popular sizes. The company also offers a rubber allowance of up to $50.00, based on the tyre’s remaining tread depth. Toyo Tire U.S.A. opines that these latest changes to its casing warranty make it one of the best in the tyre business.

Apollo Tyres has announced the introduction of the Vredestein brand in India. Four ranges from the Dutch tyre maker will initially be available there - the Ultrac Sessanta, Ultrac SUV Sessanta, Ultrac Cento and Sportrac. These will be sold in a range of sizes for 15 to 20-inch rim diameters. The Vredestein range sold in India will complement the existing Apollo passenger car range, Apollo Tyres states.

To achieve carbon neutral status the company worked with UK-headquartered professional services firm Ernst & Young to conduct a twelve-month assessment on Radar Tires total greenhouse gas emissions; these were monitored between April 2011 and March 2012. Certification involved an independent assessment of greenhouse gas emissions, coupled with an offset-inclusive emissions reduction programme.

Vredestein has brought back its second brand with the introduction of the Maloya Quadris all-season tyre. The brand, which originated in Switzerland and gained a new homeland with its acquisition by Vredestein in 1993, was absent from the company’s portfolio for the last year and a half. At the time company officials said the name was by no means ‘dead’ and, true to their word, it has been resuscitated.
