Avon Tyres has announced an original equipment deal that, while not high volume, certainly sees its tyres on an eye-catching machine. Old Empire Motorcycles, specialists in building bespoke, limited-run motorcycles, has launched its latest custom bike, the Fox. Only five of this limited-run motorcycle, which is based on the classic Royal Enfield Bullet 500, will be built – and all will be fitted with Avon Roadrunner tyres as original equipment.

KYB Corporation reports that it has been working closely with Nissan Motor Co. Ltd with a view to developing a world-leading direct adaptive steering system. KYB will supply the electronic control unit (ECU), gear assembly and reaction motor for the new system, which is fitted to the Skyline as the first vehicle in the world to go into production with this new technology fitted.

Some three years after introducing its first motorcycle tyre, the Roadiac WF-1, Nankang has expanded its two-wheel portfolio with the release of the WF-2 Sportiac sport touring tyre. The Taiwan-based tyre maker claims that two years of research and testing went into the WF-2 Sportiac’s development, and as a result the tyre “stands out with high performance in grip within every kind of road condition.”

Ceat launches first H-rated motorcycle tyre
Indian action film Dhoom3 will be released later this week and is said to be one of the most expensive films ever to come out of Bollywood. The sequel features plenty of motorcycle action, including a chase scene set in Chicago. Seizing the marketing opportunities this presents, Ceat Ltd has acquired the license from Yash Raj Films to produce a branded tyre – the first H-rated motorcycle tyre from an Indian manufacturer.

VMI adds segmented safety zones to MAXX tyre builder
The MAXX, first introduced in 2008, is VMI’s top of the range tyre building machine. Designed for hands-off and eyes-off production and equipped for robotised bead loading and green tyre removal, the MAXX is capable of producing an average of 2,000 tyres a day. VMI claims that code and size changes can be performed quickly when using the MAXX, and the fully automatic unit is set up for easy manual intervention should the need arise.

Initially two ranges from this category are on offer: The Goodyear Super Terra Grip XT 1000/40R32 and the Goodyear DT930 1100/45R46. The tyres feature a wide footprint designed for a smoother ride, tighter turn radius, reduced width, improved flotation and reduced soil compaction. Both also feature low sidewall technology, reducing road lope and power hop and improving lateral stability on hillside conditions.

The truck market was amongst the first to take steps to reduce costs when the credit crunch bit, but the flipside is that is also amongst the first to respond when conditions improve. And this is likely to have a knock-on effect on the tyre market that supplies it. Continental’s logic certainly fits with their figures. And the fact that marketing is growing again is evident based on the fact that UK and Irish truck and bus tyre replacement markets shot up 14 per cent and 5 per cent respectively in 2013. Now it is worth pointing out that these figures are based on ETRMA data which includes the top five and some other leading manufacturers, but not many of the imported brands that are popular to UK tyre buyers.
