Maxxis to launch Energtra MEco3, present European growth strategy
Maxxis will launch its highly anticipated Energtra MEco3 at Messe Essen’s Reifen 2014. The new passenger car tyre comes with an enhanced contact patch for improved handling and wet performance. Maxxis has described its “steely determination to maximise every opportunity that presents itself” at Reifen 2014. The manufacturer’s senior management and research and development teams will be present in order to make the most of having access to so many new and existing customers in one place over the course of the four-day event.

Michelin returned to Birmingham’s CV Show today with a global preview of the new X Multi T super single in size 385/65R22.5. Designed for a range of commercial vehicle applications with M+S markings, the tyre is labelled B-B-69dB), with longevity increased by around 10 per cent according to the manufacturer.

CV Show launch for Michelin’s breakdown service
Michelin is introducing a new 24/7 breakdown service for truck, bus and coach operators. The Michelin ONCall service, which uses audited and approved Michelin Certified Centres to provide coverage across the UK and Republic of Ireland, was officially launched at the CV Show today. It draws upon the combined strength of all independent Michelin Truck Professional (MTP) dealers and ATS Euromaster centres to offer a rapid-response network of more than 300 commercial vehicle-ready service points.

As of May 2014, a number of Continental truck and bus tyres will be fitted to MAN vehicles as original equipment. The steer axle Conti EcoPlus HS3 and drive axle Conti EcoPlus HD3 in sizes 315/70R22.5 and 315/70R22.5 XL are the first sizes to be approved by MAN Truck & Bus. The company has also selected Continental bus tyres for fitment to its MAN and Neoplan brands; three versions of the Conti Coach HA3, including an ‘ED’ (Extra Duty) version developed for use on demanding roads, will be supplied as original equipment.

The number of motoring publications available in Germany means we are never short of tyre test results. On 17 April, sport auto (issue 5/2014) published the results of its summer tyre comparative test; ten tyres in the popular dimension 225/40 R18 were tested, with sport auto selecting a mixture of UHP and comfort-oriented tyres for evaluation in 14 criteria, including six dry condition criteria (worth 50 per cent of the final result), six wet condition criteria (40 per cent of final result) and two environmental criteria (ten per cent of final result). The tyres were tested fitted to a VW Golf GTI.

The winners represent various industries, from natural rubber production to personnel training.

Another comparative tyre test from a German magazine – this time Autozeitung Allrad (issue 2/2104) has put half a dozen 4x4 tyres through their paces. A Mercedes-Benz ML350 was used to test the 255/50 R19 W/Y tyres. Autozeitung Allroad rated four of the six tyres highly.

CV Show first public outing for Conti Hybrid
The Commercial Vehicle Show begins tomorrow, and Continental is displaying its new Conti Hybrid tyre line for the first time at the Birmingham show. The tyre maker says the Conti Hybrid is a range developed in response to the diversity of the regional transport segment; the tyres are intended to address the challenges faced in regional delivery by offering long tyre life and a high degree of fuel efficiency. The line-up will be available at the start of the second half of 2014 and in 17.5, 19.5, and 22.5-inch formats.

The tyres securing a podium place in German magazine tyre tests are almost invariably products from the ‘top-ten’ manufacturers. This is so often the case that one publication recently described the performance of rubber from outside this small circle of tyre majors as being “surprisingly good”. The magazine was Auto Bild, and the tyre in question is the Atlas Sport Green.

Nankang to introduce new tyres at Reifen 2014
Taiwanese manufacturer Nankang (Hall 3, 3B27) has announced its plans to introduce three new tyres designed for European conditions from its stand at Reifen 2014. Targeting different functions and applications, the UHP AS-2, eco-tyre NA-1 and all-season N-607+ will “provide comprehensive capabilities without compromising in comfort,” according to the manufacturer. In addition to the new products, Nankang will shine a spotlight on the ECO-2+, “the first tyre produced in Taiwan to be awarded a TÜV performance mark” the company states, at the exhibition.

The Mitas touch – a new plant, agri tyre ‘revolution’, and a changing brand focus
Ask many Subaru owners if they’re familiar with Fuji Heavy Industries and you’ll receive a negative response, even though one of the company’s products is parked in the driveway. Czech Republic-based tyre maker Mitas has faced a similar situation in recent years. Even though the off-road specialist’s share of the European agricultural tyre market (not counting imports from outside Europe) is said to be around 35 per cent, recognition of the Mitas name doesnt necessarily reflect this. The company now intends to change this state of affairs, and the percentage of tyres it produces under the Mitas brand name is set to markedly increase over the coming five years.
