Mercedes-Benz approves Yokohama as OE for GLA-Class
Yokohama Rubber reports that it will supply original equipment tyres for the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class in certain markets. The compact SUV will come equipped with either a standard or run-flat version of its C.drive2; both are size 235/50R18 97V tyres. The standard tyre will have the letters ‘MO’ printed on the sidewall while the run-flat version has the original equipment designation ‘MOE’.

Michelin’s X Multi T debuts in size 385/65 R 22.5
Following its global preview at the CV Show in April, the size 385/65 R 22.5 version of Michelin’s X Multi T trailer tyre has been launched across Europe. The new regional super single replaces the same-size XTE3, a tyre that has sold more than four million units in Europe since its launch in 2007. The X Multi T is available as both original equipment and on the replacement market in the UK and Ireland, through the ATS Euromaster and independent Michelin Truck Professional networks.

Big Foot kits for Honda ATVs now available
Starco has introduced a wheel kit for Honda ATV users that require enhanced performance and endurance from their vehicles. The Big Foot, designed at the request of Honda in Sweden, is a fully-compliant kit comprising of four wheels and tyres. The combination was selected and tested for Honda and pairs steel wheels manufactured at Starco’s own factory in Beli Manastir, Croatia with Kenda Bear Claw tyres. The Honda kit is similar to wheel kits already available for other ATV brands under the Starco Big Foot name.

Hexpol has agreed to acquire well known US rubber compounding firm Kardoes Rubber Co. from company founder Frank Kardoes and his family for US$31.8 million. According to Hexpol, the acquisition price will be paid on a cash and debt free basis and is funded by a combination of cash and existing bank facilities. The acquisition price will be paid upon completion of the acquisition which is estimated to take place at the end of July. The business is expected to be consolidated from August 2014.

Under an agreement recently signed between Michelin and Carlsson, three Michelin tyre lines are being delivered to the German tuning manufacturer as a works-fitted option for its “most powerful models”. The Pilot Sport 3, Pilot Super Sport and Pilot Sport Cup 2 ranges are supplied by the ‘Specialty Products’ department within the Michelin Motorsports division, a department set up to manage the tyre maker’s ultra high-performance car tyre business and to serve both small and large manufacturers and tuners. The Carlsson supply deal commenced on 1 July.

Top ten tyre manufacturer, Giti Tire has confirmed its first GT Radial original equipment homologation fitments for the European passenger car and light truck market. Both Renault Nissan and PSA Peugeot Citroen will fit the manufacturer’s tyres on European models, with the latter’s Peugeot Partner and Citroen Berlingo models running on GT Radial in Western European markets.

Hankook OE on Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Its tyres are already fitted on Mercedes-Benz S- and E-Class cars, and now Hankook Tire reports it has begun supplying Daimler AG original equipment tyres for the C-Class, including run-flat tyres. The midsize Mercedes receives both standard and HRS (Hankook Runflat System) versions of the Ventus S1 evo² in size 225/50 R17 W. This is the first time that Hankook has supplied run-flat tyres as original equipment.

Russia’s JSC Tatneft reports that Kama Euro-236 tyres are being supplied as original equipment for the Lada Largus. The first tyres were supplied from the Nizhnekamskshina factory in May 2014, added Tatneft in a press statement. The Lada Largus is built on the Renault-Nissan Alliance VO platform; the equivalent vehicle is sold in Europe as the Dacia Logan MCV.

Arguments about greater steering precision aside, the chief reason for fitting low profile tyres to a car is to enhance its appearance. But a narrow sidewall is favoured by some in the off-road sector for entirely difference reasons. Titan International developed its first low profile – it calls it low sidewall, or LSW – off-road tyre in the 1990s and initially introduced the technology on the Caterpillar-brand skid steer tyre in 1999. The company believes that when the benefits of LSW are more widely known the technology will gain widespread acceptance, and to spread word about LSW a new, dedicated website has been rolled out.
