Continental extends TPMS support to industrial tyres
Slow and constant air pressure loss is one of the most common causes of tyre failure in port environments and other industrial settings. The consequences of tyre damage and the vehicle downtime that results from it are costly and disruptive to the supply chain. As a means of minimising such problems, Continental Commercial Specialty Tires (CST) has extended its ContiPressureCheck tyre pressure management system into the specialty tyre segment. Continental says its system is reliable and facilitates greater tyre lifespan. ContiPressureCheck is suitable for use on all types of industrial vehicles and functions with all brands of tubeless pneumatic tyres.

The new range of heavy truck steel wheels that Maxion Wheels is bringing to the IAA Commercial Vehicles show is six per cent lighter than the previous generation, the company reports. Furthermore, Maxion Wheels says the new GEN35TM line-up is 3.5 per cent lighter than the lightest equally-sized truck wheel currently sold anywhere in the world. The GEN35TM designation will be used for a full range of truck wheel sizes.

Bridgestone confirms its participation in the 65th IAA Commercial Vehicles International Motor Show, which will be held in Hanover, Germany from 25 September to 2 October, and says the theme of its exhibition presence (hall 16, stand C01) will be the company’s renewed Total Tyre Care programme. First presented at the previous IAA Commercial Vehicles show and rolled out in the UK beginning in 2012, Total Tyre Care is Bridgestone’s three-level, three-component fleet tyre programme.

In the Republic of Ireland things are even better. However, premium manufacturers like Bridgestone have also seen the rise in the prominence of lower cost alternatives in recent years. While companies like Bridgestone continue to occupy leading positions when it comes to blue-chip and other national fleets, the wider context brings new challenges with it, especially when it comes to countering volume versus value strategies. The ‘TerraClean on Tour’ team are celebrating after winning the 1200-mile ‘Two Ball Rally’ and raising an impressive £5000 for Macmillan Cancer Support at the same time. The technicians can normally be found using TerraClean’s unique decarbonisation technology to successfully improve the emissions, fuel economy and performance of a range of vehicles. But between 14-18 August they took turns behind the wheel of an ex-London taxi – bought for only £500 and given the TerraClean treatment before it departed – in a bid to win the Two Ball Rally.

Zeus will be a subsidiary of Accella Polyurethane Systems, further building the tyre fill business along with the Arnco and Pathway Performance Polymers subsidiaries. No price details have been revealed.

Cooper Tire Europe has introduced a new winter range under its Starfire Tires associated brand. The Starfire W200 is aimed at the compact car market and manufactured at Cooper’s Kruševac facility in Serbia. Following testing in Alpine winter conditions, the tyre maker reports this newest member of the Starfire winter portfolio is a tyre that “delivers exceptional grip in snow, slush and wet conditions, thanks to state-of-the-art computer technology and increased sipe density.”

Later this month the IAA Commercial Vehicles show will get underway in Germany, and Hankook Tire says one of its aims as an exhibitor will be to promote extremely fuel-efficient products; both world premieres Hankook plans for the show address the increasing demand for cost-effectiveness and efficiency, particularly in the freight forwarding business. Hankook will also focus on tyres for the original equipment segment and display its 3PMSF-labelled all-season and new winter tyres, along with new sizes for existing truck tyre ranges.

Market analysts from consulting firm Clear International reports that trailer demand in the largest seven Western Europe economies is forecast to increase by 15 per cent during the course of 2014. According to the analysts, this is the first report in roughly two years that has not reported a downturn in the economic outlook.
