Pirelli Scorpion Winter top in SUV tyre test
In the current SUV winter tyre test presented by German motoring magazine Auto Zeitung Allrad (issue 5/14), eight size 235/65R17 H/V tyres are put through their paces on an Audi Q5 TFSI Quattro. The magazine’s team voted the Pirelli Scorpion Winter test winner. Four further tyres, the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D, Goodyear Ultragrip+ SUV, Michelin Latitude Alpin LA3 and Uniroyal MS Plus 77, were rated “highly recommendable”. Sixth place was held by the Bridgestone Blizzak LM-80 Evo, and the wooden spoon was shared by the Kumho l’Zen RV KC15 and Nokian WR SUV 3.

Hankook extends luxury SUV tyre supply with US deal
Hankook Tire will supply its Dynapro HT all-season tyre as original equipment for the 2015 Lincoln Navigator, an SUV built primarily for the North American market. The company views supply of the 275/55R20T tyre as further penetration into both the Lincoln brand and the luxury SUV segment as a whole. In addition to this new agreement for the Navigator, Hankook supplies Ford’s premium vehicle division with tyres for the Lincoln MKT full-size touring saloon and MKZ mid-size passenger car.

Bridgestone targets adventure touring riders with latest Battlax tyre
The Battlax family of motorcycle tyres has been extended to the adventure touring segment. First seen at the Intermot fair in Germany at the start of the month, the new Battlax Adventure A40 expands the all-weather potential of trail radials for the many riders who use their adventure machines primarily for on-road touring. Bridgestone says the starting point for the new product’s development was its Battle Wing tyre, and the goal its engineers held was to significantly improve the Battle Wing’s dry and wet handling without sacrificing its high-level stability and durability.

Auto Bild result reinforces Westlake quality/value message, says Zenises
As reported today, German motoring magazine Auto Bild recently published its annual winter tyre test. Out of the 50 tested tyres, only 16 were deemed worthy of progressing to the second round of tests – and just 14 were given a ‘recommended’ or higher rating. Many in the final 14 were products from household name premium tyre manufacturers, but – as Leicester City showed Manchester United last month – it isn’t always the big names that finish on top. A name many didn’t expect to see was Westlake, who received a recommended result for its SW608 and in doing so highlighted the truth that not all Chinese tyres are price-driven, lower-quality products.

Western Europe launch – development of Starco’s solid forklift tyre ranges continues
Although at three years of age Starco’s solid industrial tyre production plant in Sri Lanka is still a relative infant, initial targets set for the facility have already been reached and the company is now looking ahead to the next milestones. This sort of success doesn’t occur by accident, and the good experiences Starco has enjoyed so far in Sri Lanka are the result of planning that began long before the plant was even set up. Tyres & Accessories recently met a key figure Starco assigned to implement the solid tyre project, and learned a little more about the factory and the products being made there.

Winter tyre test braking results give Auto Bild the chills
In the seven-page winter tyre test in its 40/2014 edition, German motoring magazine Auto Bild sifted through no less than fifty products to identify the best tyres for use in the cold season. Many tyres failed to get past the first braking test, but after the second round of testing, in which the 16 best-performing of the size 225/50 R17 tyres were further evaluated on the testers’ BMW 3 Series, Auto Bild named four as ‘exemplary’, ten ‘recommendable’, and two as ‘conditionally recommendable’. While the “usual suspects” – the premium brands – dominated the stop spots in the test, there were a couple of positive surprises.
