An all-new tyre brand from Hankook Tire was unveiled at the SEMA show in Las Vegas yesterday. This new range from the Korean tyre maker will be sold under the Laufenn name, and although its initial launch is restricted to ten markets in North America, Latin America and the Asia Pacific region, Hankook describes Laufenn as a “global tyre brand” and says it will be introduced in Europe and other regions “in the coming years,” although a European launch in 2015 looks highly unlikely.

Crysler Group LLC is recalling 21,042 2014-model year Ram ProMaster vehicles in the US due to a Tyre Press Monitoring System (TPMS) fault. The problem is that in the affected vehicles, the TPMS may fail to learn the locations of the individual sensors while the vehicle is being driven. As a result, the low tyre pressure warning light will light-up irrespective of the tyre pressure.

Continental shares news that its ContiWinterContact TS850 finished first place in a winter tyre test conducted by Polish car magazine “motor”. The latest issue (43/14) of the publication compared seven size 195/65 R15 tyres. The winning ContiWinterContact TS850 was rated “highly recommended” and described as being “very good in the wet, very good on dry roads and good balance on snow.”

As the first brand to achieve passenger car tyre double-A grading on both the European and the Japanese tyre labels with the EP001S, Bridgestone’s Ecopia product range must be considered one of the leading eco tyre ranges in the current, post-labelling era. More noticeably, in terms of the shape of the product at least, Bridgestone’s EP500 “ologic” large and narrow tyre is a signifier that more radical product design decisions are making it to production. While the terminology for tyres designed to be eco-friendly is not exactly fixed, with definitions subject to subtle variations depending on the manufacturer, the presence of a rolling resistance A or B-grade on both major tyre labels to use this measurement seems a fair way to define an eco tyre. Yet for premium brands, the label grades can only be one part of the picture, as the end user is likely to be more discerning about their product choice, having paid generally a higher price for the product.

During the course of the recent Brityrex exhibition in Manchester, Chris Dawson, head of sales and marketing at Silverline explained how the companys latest products are helping it achieve its goals. According to Dawson the Atturo brand, for example, has been “exceptionally well received”, with the company having sold out of certain products and sizes six months earlier than expected – despite computer modelling stock projections. The next goal is to sell 10,000 more units of these niche off-road 4x4 tyres during the next 12 months, a goal that should be “easily achievable”, according to Dawson.
