Starco goes to Hollywood
North Korea’s response to ‘The Interview’ has placed Hollywood under a particularly intense spotlight of late, but our first news of the week relates to something less controversial and, as you’d expect, more tyre-related. But nevertheless it focuses on films and film making – Polish cinema camera crane manufacturer Moviebird has selected Starco wheels for fitment on its products.

TPMS now standard on all new vehicles
2015 represents the first full year of both mandatory TPMS on new vehicles and system functionality tests as part of MOT tests at the aftermarket end of the spectrum. And according to those in the TPMS sector, this new legislation has brought new confidence to the TPMS market. Translogik aiming to significantly increase sales volume with new product
At the end of 2014, with news of the launch of the new Opti-Tread system for passenger car tyre auditing still fresh, Tyres & Accessories visited Translogik CEO Laren Yeomans at the company’s new Oxfordshire offices in order to find out more about the new product and how it fits into Translogik’s wider strategy. But first a little background. Translogik is the Tyre Management Solutions division of Transense Technologies PLC, a firm specialising in the development of Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) sensors and related technologies. WheelRight launches mobile TPMS
WheelRight launched a mobile version of its tyre pressure monitoring system during the last month. The system measures tyre pressure on vehicles including cars and commercial vehicles using a rollover plate and then sends readings to the user’s mobile phone. Companies can now also trial the mobile device for a 24-hour period, according to the company. The idea is that fleets will be able to see for themselves the benefits of moving from monthly to daily pressure checks in gaining instant tyre pressure readings for each vehicle when upgrading to an installed unit.

Rubbery harvest – Mitas to trial dandelion rubber in agricultural tyres
Continental, Apollo Vredestein and Bridgestone have all expressed interest in using dandelion-sourced rubber as a substitute for Hevea brasiliensis rubber in tyre production. Now Mitas has indicated its intention to evaluate the suitability of dandelion rubber for use in the manufacture of agricultural tyres. The company will use rubber extracted from Taraxacum koksaghyz (Kazakh dandelion) and aims to produce the first prototype tyre some time in 2015. This plan complements Mitas’ involvement in the Drive4EU project, which is researching the possibilities of using rubber from the Kazakh dandelion.

Klarius exhaust maintains performance for Nissan 350Z
The Nissan 350Z has two qualities that make it a favourite for petrol heads: it’s fast and it’s reliable. The only drawback to this is if something does go wrong it can be hard to find an aftermarket solution that doesn’t break the bank - or the car’s performance figures. Fortunately for fans of the sporty coupé, Klarius has developed a full exhaust system which is type approved to European standards and offers identical performance figures to that of the original equipment.

Bridgestone develops CAIS-based tyre wear sensor
It’s more than three years since Bridgestone Corporation first announced its work with what it calls Contact Area Information Sensing, or CAIS. When it initially presented CAIS at the IAA Cars show in 2011, the tyre maker proposed the use of the “future technology” for determining road surface conditions. Now Bridgestone says it has developed a system based on CAIS that can estimate tyre wear and tread depth. No timetable for rolling out the technology in volume-production tyres has been announced at this stage.
