‘Lowering the bar’ – Bridgestone rolls out its VT-Tractor agricultural range
Now would be a good time to bin any romantic stereotypes of bucolic rural idyll. Agriculture has always been a serious business for those engaged in the sector, and the deployment of technology and new practices to maximise land productivity is nothing new. And while British farmers haven’t more recently experienced the pressure to ‘get big or get out’ as much as their peers in some markets, the drive for greater efficiency has however meant a trend towards larger-sized agricultural equipment. But larger also means heavier, and the extent to which yield is affected by vehicles traversing fields has thus gained a new significance. And this is where our protagonist enters the story.

An influx of imports is making the car tyre market even more competitive
On 27 January the UK economy registered growth of 2.6 per cent in 2014. Of course it has not been the same across Europe, but with record new car registrations in the UK and 32 consecutive months of growth in that figure, you could be forgiven for asking why the UK tyre market came out as flat according to both the sell-in and sell-out measurements in 2014. At the same time it is important to set all this into its wider European context, something which this month’s analysis of the passenger car tyre market attempts to embark on.

Michelin identifies young riders as a key UK motorcycle growth area
Michelin has suggested that 2015 could be the “year of two wheels for young drivers” after an increase in compulsory basic training applications from the under-25s and a sales uplift from bike retailers and tyre dealerships. According to the tyre manufacturer’s Stoke-based driver safety partner – Bryans Road Safety Centre with whom Michelin runs a range of on-road and off-road driver and motorcycle rider training courses – 2014 saw double-digit growth for courses from each of the key 16, 17-18 and 19-23 age groups. The increase seems particularly relevant to the latter group, which registered a 25 per cent increase.

Bilstein recommends shock absorber check every 20,000 km
In Germany, as elsewhere in Europe, the average age of cars on the road is increasing. The TÜV Report 2014 shows that one car in seven has defective suspension. According to Dekra, 20 per cent of all technical defects which lead to an accident are still attributable to the suspension. For this reason, suspension specialist Bilstein recommends that shock absorbers be checked regularly and replaced when necessary in an auto workshop. To restore 100 per cent driving safety, shocks and springs should always be replaced in pairs on each axle.

Falken’s eco-PCR products give retailers chance to sell more sustainable products
Sumitomo’s “fossil fuel-free” tyre was one of the products on display at European brand, Falken Tyre’s Reifen 2014 stand, and while the tyre is still in development for the European market (as opposed to the Dunlop-branded version on sale in Japan), Falken has embraced a commitment to greener tyres similar to that of some higher-priced premium brands. The manufacturer’s Ecorun range, with patterns such as the Ziex ZE914 and Sincera SN832, distinguish its more environmentally-friendly products, with notably large improvements in their performance achieved in the last few years.
