The UK is the second largest 4x4 tyre market in Europe, according to the latest data provided by well-known market researchers and tyre market analysts GfK. During recent discussions with GfK automotive account director Kevin Glynn, we learnt that the Italian 4x4 tyre segment is top of the pile and still growing, the UK’s share of this business is second-place but flat, and Germany takes the bronze medal in this respect, but is growing at nearly ten times the rate of the Italian 4x4 tyre market.

Michelin’s services company, Michelin Solutions will introduce a new generation of ‘pence per kilometre’ (PPK) tyre management contracts at the CV Show. The new products will offer customers a contractual fuel saving commitment, available on Effitires contracts when fitting premium low rolling resistance tyres. Michelin Solutions believes the move makes it the first provider in the marketplace to contractually commit to fuel savings on its tyre management contracts.

To loosely paraphrase the 2012 Taylor Swift song, Sentury Tires America is never, ever getting back together with the CLV6 tyre. In a statement released 19 February, Toyo Tire Holdings of Americas Inc. shared that Sentury has “agreed to never produce the original CLV6 tyre that was displayed at the 2012 SEMA Show or any tyre with a similar tread design” as part of the settlement it has reached with Toyo. The CLV6 was viewed by Toyo as an infringement of its United States design patent for the tread design used on its Nitto Motivo tyre.

German motoring association ADAC and consumer organisation Stiftung Warentest have jointly tested 35 size 185/60 R14 H and size 205/55 R16 V tyres for their latest summer tyre test. The second-mentioned size is the country’s most-sold tyre size for mid-class cars, and the ADAC notes that four pairs of these 205/55 R16 V tyres were evaluated as part of the test. Each pair was an eco/comfort product from the same manufacturer, and placing them back to back gave an additional insight into their respective strengths and weaknesses.

Leicestershire-based Tyron Runflat Limited has presented its latest run-flat system at the IDEX 2015 defence exhibition and conference in Abu Dhabi. Known as Friction Shield, the system is intended for use on armoured vehicles and consists of sealed, multi-piece run-flat inserts that contain a self-sealing lubricant. The inserts burst when a tyre deflates; Tyron Runflat says the use of separate sachets that burst upon tyre deflation ensures the right amount of lubricant is delivered and enables the vehicle to continue travelling for extended periods.

Following on from the development of 18 and 38-inch versions of its PneuTrac, Mitas has now produced a 28-version of the tyre/track hybrid tyre technology it is working on. This week the new size is on display at the SIMA agri business fair in Paris. The tyre maker has mounted the 480/65 R28 PneuTrac on the front axle of a Case IH Maxxum tractor, paired with a size 600/65 R38 PneuTrac; this can be viewed in Hall 3, on stand E016. The previously-released PneuTrac 280/70 R18 and 600/65 R38 are currently undergoing intensive dynamic tests.

Netherlands based transport company, Snel Logistic Solutions has completed an internal trial on Goodyear’s Fuelmax range of commercial vehicle tyres. Initial internal results have revealed that tractors fitted with the tyres save one litre of fuel per 100 kilometres compared with the other tyres in the test. Goodyear has been competing hard to win fleet business since the launch of its latest commercial vehicle tyre lines, FuelMax and KMax, resulting in its deal with UK market leader Eddie Stobart in 2014. A year ago Goodyear announced that the FuelMax S had become the first steer position truck tyre to attain A-graded fuel efficiency on the EU tyre label.

Bridgestone will display its ologic and run-flat technologies at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, along with its ‘air free’ concept – a non-pneumatic tyre aimed at providing a low-maintenance and fully sustainable ‘cradle to cradle’ solution that maximises the recycling of worn tyres and other resources. Also present will be the company’s more conventional product lines including, for the first time in many years, the Firestone brand. Passenger car and SUV tyres from the Firestone range will share stand space in Geneva with their Bridgestone brethren. The tyre maker will also share information about the new Firestone Music Tour – a network of festivals sponsored by Firestone.
