Get a life – and share it with your car
Just a generation ago the humble motor vehicle doubled as a ‘fortress of solitude’, a place the long arm of everyday responsibility couldn’t reach and a haven for those seeking a few moments’ headspace at the start or the end of a busy day. But unreachability is an increasingly scarce commodity these days. The introduction of hands-free systems has transformed the fortress into an office on four wheels for many, and now technology lurking just around the corner will bring our home-life cares to us on the road as well.

Michelin: CrossClimate demand much stronger than anticipated
The CrossClimate, Michelin’s winter-certified summer tyre, has been on the market in Europe since May – and the French tyre maker says it is doing well. A recent Michelin newsletter reported the sale of the millionth CrossClimate tyre just two months after the range’s introduction, and word from Michelin at this week’s IAA show in Frankfurt is that 2015 sales targets for the CrossClimate will most likely be exceeded by more than 30 per cent.

Unseasonably cool – Hankook presents all-season, winter tyre ranges at Test World
When it comes to testing a vehicle or tyre’s winter aptitude, few places in the world better are suited to the job than the Finnish village of Ivalo, some 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The average daily temperature struggles to rise above -10⁰C in the dark months of January and February, and for half the year the white stuff beloved by skiers is abundantly present. No surprise then that Test World, the internationally-renown vehicle and tyre tester and type approval centre, chose to set up shop just outside Ivalo. But what does Test World do in summer, when its ice and snow circle turns into a massive birdbath? It moves winter indoors.

Continental takes victory in GTÜ winter tyre test
German vehicle inspection organisation the Gesellschaft für Technische Überwachung (GTÜ) has released one of the season’s first winter tyre tests, and the result are mostly positive. The test of eight size 225/50 R17 H/V tyres was jointly carried out with the Autoclub Europa (ACE), using a BMW 320i as test vehicle. The tyres were subjected to the usual snow, ice and wet tests.

Nokian wins Auto Express all-season tyre test; dry performance remains ‘concern’ for segment
Auto Express has named the Nokian Weatherproof as its number one all-season car tyre in its survey of the segment. Testing a modest six tyres at Nokians test centre in Ivalo, Finland for winter conditions and at Contidrom, Germany for summer conditions, the test was a first for the magazine, highlighting the growth trend Tyrepress.com has noted in the UK market for such products. The Nokian Weatherproof was declared the test winner, and an Auto Express ‘Best Buy’, perhaps unsurprisingly sweeping away the competition in the winter tests (the winter rubber specialist uses Test World to test its tyres). The test’s most notable omission is Michelin’s self-professed “game-changer”, the 2015 launched CrossClimate. The French manufacturer has responded hawkishly to references to the new product as an all-season tyre despite its year-round applicability, though tyre test coordinator Kim Adams noted that its March 2015 launch was “just too late” for the tyre to be included.

The number of Audi models delivered with factory-fitted Hankook tyres is set to increase once the new generation Audi A4 and A4 Avant arrives in the showrooms. Hankook Tire reports that the new A4 will receive several sizes of its flagship Ventus S1 evo² tyre: Cars shipped on 17-inch rims will be fitted with a 225/50R17Y tyre (including an XL extra load version), while larger-rimmed A4s will receive the 245/40R18Y (XL) and 245/35R19Y (XL). The original equipment version of the Ventus S1 evo² was developed at Hankook Tire’s European Technology Centre (ETC) in Germany, where Hankook coordinates tyre development for Audi AG vehicles, and is manufactured at Hankook’s factory in Hungary.

IAA launch for Hankook Tire’s European Laufenn range
Although stocks won’t begin arriving at tyre dealers for another half a year, Hankook Tire launched its Laufenn tyre brand in Europe today and has given details about the five ranges it will release in our region. Laufenn’s launch at the IAA motor show comes ten months after the brand was initially introduced at SEMA in Las Vegas, and the products presented in Frankfurt differ slightly from those unveiled last November; Hankook Tire says the range was “developed especially for the European market.”

Garmin introduces two new Dash Cams
Garmin International has announced the launch of the new Dash Cam 30 and Dash Cam 35. Representing the next generation of the Garmin Dash Cam, these two high-definition standalone driving recorders easily mount to a windshield and record footage in a continuous loop. Garmin Dash Cam starts recording when the vehicle is turned on and stops when it is turned off, serving as a driver’s true eyewitness on the road. The Incident Detection (G-sensor) automatically saves video footage on impact. New driver alerts allow Dash Cam to not only record the drive ahead, but also offer helpful alerts that encourage safer driving behaviour for customers.
