At this year’s Geneva Motor Show, Renault lifted the wraps on the fourth generation of its Scénic multi-purpose vehicle. The new model is equipped across the range with 20-inch rims as standard, a bold choice for a mass market car yet a size exterior designer Jérémie Sommer pushed, claiming the larger diameter rims form a “fundamental part” of the Scénic’s “perfectly-balanced silhouette and pleasing proportions.” The tyre size of choice for the new Renault is 195/55 R20, and Goodyear will act as exclusive all-season tyre supplier. The tyre maker will also deliver summer tyres for certain models.

Kumho made Reifen 2016 the occasion of its new UHP winter tyre’s world premiere, in addition to displaying its role in a project to optimise the fuel efficiency of existing diesel technology. Maxxis exhibited at Reifen from a prominent Hall 3 stand commensurate with the brand’s global positioning, and increasingly with its focus on Europe. Robert Lo, chairman of Maxxis manufacturer Cheng Shin Rubber Ind Co and Derek McMartin, managing director of Maxxis International UK explained to Tyres & Accessories that the stand included a portfolio containing the brand’s first “dedicated European products”. The new M36+, launched at Reifen, is perhaps the most prominent example of this.

The European Tyre Recycling Association (ETRA) has launched a campaign to refute allegations about the impact of tyre rubber granulate used in sports fields. In recent years, it says, unfounded claims have been made that recycled tyre rubber can harm those coming into contact with it while playing sports - in particular, those in goalkeeping roles. However, despite two decades of research into the subject funded by industry, governments and public interest groups, “there is no empirical research that links tyre rubber to cancer”, ETRA asserts.

The Chinese Intellectual Property Court has upheld VMI’s claims against Shuangjun Plastic and Rubber Machinery Ltd. and awarded the full compensation requested by VMI to be paid by Shuangjun. The Chinese Patent Management Bureau ruled that Shuangjun was guilty of patent infringement against VMI’s patent for its tyre building drum back in 2015.

Bridgestone has forged a partnership with Peel Ports Group at its new £300 million Liverpool 2 container terminal. The deep water facility is able to handle 95 per cent of the world’s container ships and Bridgestone reports that the tyre firm will provide a ‘Total Tyre Care’ service for Liverpool 2’s container handling machinery. Bridgestone’s Peter Harriss, major accounts executive, has been in discussions with Peel Ports for a number of months and has confirmed that Bridgestone will be supplying tyres for the fleet’s straddle carriers, reach stackers and mobile cranes: “We have been working with Peel Ports for some time and to be able to support their team at the prestigious Liverpool 2 development is a huge coup for us.”
