Nottingham City Transport has shortlisted the GT Radial GAU861 as an all-position tyre of choice. The operator had been contracted to a premium manufacturer until April 2014, but took purchasing in-house to access the open market.

The ‘Gen-1’ version of Goodyear’s UltraGrip Performance winter passenger car tyre was launched in time for the previous winter, and this year the range has been extended with the addition of an SUV version. The first three UltraGrip Performance SUV Gen-1 sizes were introduced in May and the range is now available in 16 dimensions (including seven new SKUs), a size portfolio said to cover more than 40 per cent of the SUV car parc.

The platform will initially offer the functionality of Superscan 3 on a pay-as-you-go basis. With the help of the RAC investment, Nebula says it will use the flexibility of scalable cloud-based IT infrastructure to develop MECH5 rapidly.

If the vehicle is also aware of the road surface quality, risks are reduced even further. That’s where NIRA Dynamics and the firm’s Road Surface Information software come in. This software combined with NIRA’s Cloud cloud-based solution are said to enable just that. And now, in cooperation with Infocar, the company is taking the next step in the rollout of the solution.

With support from the Swedish Energy Agency, Volvo Trucks has developed a new vehicle for evaluation purposes, the Volvo Concept Truck. It is the result of a five-year research project aimed at creating more energy-efficient vehicles. Volvo Trucks claims the concept vehicle cuts fuel consumption by more than 30 per cent through a 40 per cent improvement in aerodynamic efficiency and the use of low rolling resistance tyres. These tyres – prototype tyres, of course – have been provided by official project tyre supplier Continental. Size 315/70 R22.5 tyres were selected for both the steer and drive axles, while the concept truck’s trailer is equipped with 385/55 R22.5 tyres.

ZC Rubber (Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co., Ltd) has introduced an upgraded version of its SV308 summer tyre. Called the SA57, the new product is available in 33 passenger car and nine SUV sizes, and is said to offer a ten per cent shorter wet braking distance than the previous generation tyre, along with five per cent improved wet handling, three per cent better dry handling, three per cent less noise and two per cent less rolling resistance.
