Ams winter tyre test: a win for Continental
Following its test of all-season SUV tyres, German car magazine auto motor und sport (ams) has now turned its attention to dedicated winter tyres. The same model vehicle, an Opel/Vauxhall Mokka, saw service once again as test car for the comparative evaluation of ten size 215/60 R17 H/V winter products. The tyres were tested for snow, wet and dry performance, with each of these counting 30 per cent towards the final score, with the remaining ten percent reserved for environmental criteria.

Ogilvie Fleet chooses Michelin CrossClimate tyres for mobile optician
Ogilvie Fleet has teamed up with Kwik Fit to switch its customer Complete Price Eyewear to Michelin CrossClimate tyres. Before moving 93 Honda Civic and Volvo V40 and V60 cars in the mobile optician’s fleet to CrossClimate tyres, Ogilvie Fleet put two sets to the test for six months on vehicles coping with the worst of Britain’s weather. Jim Hannah, operations director at Ogilvie Fleet, said: “CrossClimate tyres are a fantastic choice for the UK fleet market, as they can handle anything the country’s notoriously unpredictable weather can throw at us. The tyres [eliminate] the need to switch from summer to winter fitments, and cuts both the cost of employing a ‘tyre hotel’ and the associated fitting fees – which is particularly advantageous for companies with vehicles based all over the country…

Michelin previews CrossClimate+ at Paris Motor Show
Hot on the heels of the news that Michelin’s year-round summer tyre (the CrossClimate) has beaten all-season tyres at their own game in a magazine tyre test (see “Summer tyre wins all-season test”, which reports on the ADAC test originally published on 22 September), Michelin previewed the next generation of its category-defying product – the CrossClimate+ at the Paris Motor Show at the start of October. In addition to the original product’s unique summer-tyre-with-a-three-peaks-mountain-snowflake qualification, the latest version is said to improve winter performance and consistent whole tread life performance. This latter point picks up on what appears to be an increasingly important theme to Michelin – that tyres should performs consistently well through right up to the 1.6mm legal tread depth limit (see “Michelin reaffirms opposition to 3mm replacement” for more on this).

Supertracker introduces 3D efficiency to wheel alignment range
Supertracker will introduce its first 3D wheel aligner in October. The company is marking its 30th year of successful trading with this new landmark. Managing director Trevor Lovesy says: “Over the past couple of years we have experimented with the new concept of 3D alignment and concluded that the crucifix style systems have a definite limitation in terms of space, flexibility and accuracy. However we have now introduced the STR600 3D wheel aligner that completely eliminates these problems as we have moved the camera location to the lift which eliminates the need to move a vehicle backward and forward to obtain readings.”

Michelin: Tyres should perform throughout their legal tread life
While some manufacturers lobby for tyres to be replaced at 3 or even 4 mm, Michelin maintains that the current legal limit of 1.6 mm is “perfectly suited” to modern motoring and has reaffirmed its opposition to a change in the legislation. Indeed, during the course of the Paris Motor Show, Michelin’s top executives will be making this argument with journalists, OEMs and of course the public. Tyres & Accessories spoke with Michelin senior vice president and the person responsible for overseeing the company’s whole-life tyre performance project, Bernard Delmas. The over-riding logic behind Michelin’s argument is that “new tyres” don’t really exist because tyres begin to be worn from the moment they roll off the production line. Therefore Michelin argues that all tyres should offer strong and consistent performance across all criteria right down to the wear indicator at 1.6 mm.

Mitas tyres help Claas tractor ‘walk on water’
Mitas high-horsepower tyres helped a Claas Axos 320 tractor weighing four tons to “walk on water”. Thanks to careful calculation and Archimedes’ principle, the tractor successfully navigated the port and then returned to dry land without the captain getting his feet wet. Mitas, part of Trelleborg Group, and its partners carried out the unusual stunt in the Netherlands. One of the world’s largest agricultural tyres, Mitas1250/50R32 SFT, was fitted on the rear axle and Mitas 750/55R30 SFT on the front axle of the floating Claas tractor.

Summer tyre wins all-season test
The results table for the 2016 Auto Bild all-season tyre test saw last year’s winner and runner-up – the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons and Michelin CrossClimate – swap places. This occurrence means that this year’s size 205/55 R16 all-season tyre test was in fact won by a summer tyre, as Michelin considers its CrossClimate a summer fitment designed and legally approved for year-round use. Call it what you like, at any rate the Auto Bild team deemed the Michelin CrossClimate the pick of the ten-tyre bunch, and awarded it the test’s only ‘exemplary’ rating.
