Autodata – workshops should prepare customers for winter
It’s easy enough to prepare for the winter, therefore Autodata poses the question: Why then are UK drivers always so unprepared? Rather than waiting for customers’ vehicles to break down this winter, the company recommends workshops be proactive and draw upon their customer database in order to inform motorists of the raised risk of battery and other vehicle faults during the cold months.

Pilot Sport EV2 brings more range, performance to Formula E
The mission of the FIA Formula E championship is to drive technology from the racetrack to the road, and this means we should be interested in how the second generation of Michelin’s Formula E race tyre performs. The new Pilot Sport EV2’s competitive debut took place at the Hong Kong ePrix on the weekend, allowing us to finally see what Michelin’s claimed “two steps” forward” in development means in terms of performance. Pascal Couasnon, director of Michelin Motorsport, is proud of the evolutionary development present in the second-generation tyre.

Winter or all-season tyres?
TÜV SÜD has shared its thoughts on winter and all-season tyres. While the testing and certification specialist doesn’t wish to cast doubt over the safety advantage winter tyres offer when driving on snow and ice, it also considers all-season tyres a suitable choice for motorists who only drive in flat or lowland regions and spend a lot of time on the motorway.

New sand tyre completes Bridgestone’s Battlecross range
Bridgestone has completed the roll-out of its new-generation MX line-up with the launch of the Battlecross X10 sand terrain tyre. The tyre features a new tread design that, together with increased block deformation, is said to give riders stronger traction, better self-cleaning and higher sideslip control in all types of sandy conditions. Bridgestone worked with top riders on the MX competition circuit when developing and testing the tyre, and comments that by deploying the new design in its mainstream Battlecross range, it “now makes higher performance on sandy tracks attainable for all riders, from national champions to intermediates and beginners.”

At the start of the year, the British car industry revelled in optimism that an all-time vehicle production record would be achieved by 2020 in the UK. The 900,000 cars rolling off the UK’s production lines in the first half 2016 – a sixteen-year high and 13 per cent up on the same portion of 2015 – gave more reason to be hailing this new dawn, and while a significant measure of doubt was added by Brexit, the figures suggest that the growth has come with premiumisation and a sustained boom in SUV manufacturing. High-end marques such as Range Rover drive this new demand and have made the UK Europe’s second biggest premium car producer. In 2010, the premium sector accounted for just 34 per cent of UK production; should trends continue, by 2020 this figure is expected to hit 54 per cent, with SUV and 4x4 models a big part of this.

January launch for Bridgestone Dueler A/T 001
The Bridgestone Dueler 4x4 line-up will soon be strengthened by the addition of a tyre aimed at drivers who spend most of their time on-road yet occasionally hanker for dirt and mud. Bridgestone promotes the new Dueler A/T 001 as a “tough all-terrain and all-season tyre that doesn’t compromise on its on-road capabilities,” and from January 2017 the tyre will progressively replace the Dueler A/T 694 across Europe. An initial range of 23 sizes for 15- to 18-inch rims will cater to more than half of all European 4x4 tyre demand.

From Ferrari to Land Rover: Pirelli highlights new OE at Paris Motor Show
A number of the most eagerly-awaited cars debuting at the Paris Motor Show this month wear Pirelli rubber as original equipment, the Italian manufacturer reports. Pirelli tyres can be seen on two new Ferrari models and on the latest Audi Q5, Porsche Panamera and Land Rover Discovery. The latter three benefit from the Pirelli Noise Cancelling System, a sound-soaking sponge within the tyre that reduces tyre noise by two to three decibels – an amount equivalent to around half of all cabin noise.
