110 new homologations for Pirelli, including Frankfurt Motor Show UHP stars
Pirelli has recorded what it describes as a record number of homologations in August 2017, with 110. These include the Scorpion Winter and Sottozero for winter conditions; P Zero and its racing counterpart P Zero Corsa for UHP fitments; and the Cinturato family, including the P7 All Season for cars of medium engine capacity.

Bridgestone’s largest Bandag franchise, Bulldog in Bourne, Lincolnshire is a central pillar in Bridgestone’s UK Total Tyre Care truck and bus tyre strategy, and as such has been a target for ongoing investment. Most recently, Bridgestone has installed the BASys casing and production control system, digitally linking the tripartite facility and tracking the journey of retreads through the manufacturing process. This joins the latest piece of retread production equipment, the latest generation Bandag extruder builder the 9110ES, which was installed in 2016, and is now fully operational. Tyres & Accessories visited the Bulldog site to see the latest upgrades in action, and how Bulldog intends to capitalise on the current moment of what Bridgestone retread development manager for the North region (UK, Ireland, and the Nordic region) Terry Salter terms a “golden period” for retreading.

Windscreen wiper blade developer and supplier Trico has won the prestigious Retail Product of the Year Award for the Mota1 range at A1’s Convention recently held in Dubrovnik, Croatia. In turn, Trico presented A1 member, Sam Gutteridge from Epic Accessories with a Peugeot Partner van having successfully exceeded its target during the three-month wiper blade promotion.

FIA World Rally Championship tyre manufacturer Dmack has launched a new gravel tyre, available to competitors at the final three rounds of the 2017 championship. Aimed specifically at WRC cars and competitors, the new DMG+22 gravel tyre will first see action at RACC Rally de Espana next month – equipping Elfyn Evans’ M-Sport World Rally Team Ford Fiesta WRC. The brand hopes to build upon its success this season, having missed victory in Argentina by 0.7 seconds, and setting fastest times on five of the six gravel rallies this season.

Giti Tire has renamed its UK retread programme Giti Genesis as part of its European truck and bus rebranding project. Originally known as GT REE-Tread when it was launched at the CV Show 2012, the next generation products show strong continuity in most aspects – it will remain a hot cure bead-to-bead retread manufactured using Giti casings, though there have been some changes, the biggest of which is the identity of the retreader. The Giti Genesis is available in two patterns: the GDR690 regional drive axle tyre is available in 295/80R22.5, 315/70R22.5 and 315/80R22.5; the GTR990 regional trailer tyre is offered in size 385/65R22.5.

With Continental’s acquisition and subsequent integration of Bandvulc, the UK retreading market was left with one remaining large independent operation in Lincolnshire-based Vacu-Lug. There were obvious comparisons between the firms – both private, family-owned businesses before Conti’s takeover; both in possession of a large chunk of UK retread market share; both offering the sorts of fleet management service options – but the change of ownership of one gives a new dimension to commercial vehicle tyre manufacturers’ decision of which firm to partner in the production of retreads for the UK.

Goodyear’s Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure 265/65 R17 claimed first place in an all-terrain tyre test conducted by DriveOut Magazine. Of the seven tested tyres, including such names as General and BFGoodrich, Goodyear’s new on/off road tyre ranked highest with an overall result of 97,46 per cent. The manufacturer stated that the test win was “testimony to Goodyear’s continuous innovation and long heritage in the 4x4 category.”

Few names are as synonymous with professional off-road tyres as Cooper, and the American manufacturer has extended its reach in the segment in recent years via its relationship with the Dakar veteran Xavi Foj, made a brand ambassador. The latest tyre to be released by the manufacturer, the Discoverer S/TMAXX POR (Professional Off Road), as a tyre designed for 4x4 driving in extreme conditions, is one that is particularly relevant to Foj. Indeed, the driver commented on its introduction: “the Discoverer S/TMAXX POR is my tyre of choice, the most complete tyre for all uses – from daily tarmac to victory in the toughest terrain in the Dakar Rally.”

Pirelli has joined simulation company Slightly Mad Studios’ Project CARS franchise in a technical, promotional, and marketing partnership. The agreement brings Pirelli’s motorsport and tyre technology, and North America’s premier GT production series, the Pirelli World Challenge, to the second iteration of the game. The series will come with Project CARS 2’s release on 22 September, playable in the in-game career mode, and featuring GT3 cars and their specific liveries. Tracks include Long Beach, Circuit of the Americas, Road America, and the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

MWheels and wheel manufacturing giant Wheels India (WIL) have signed a new five-year exclusive European distribution agreement for Xlite and Xbrite forged aluminium wheels. The contract continues a relationship that started in the 1940s with classic car wire wheels, and which progressed into steel commercial vehicle wheels in the 1980s and forged aluminium CV wheels in 2010.

Car service operator Addison Lee’s adoption of a Michelin CrossClimate+ policy, managed by Universal Tyre and Autocentres, has resulted in a reduction in its annual tyre bill of 20 per cent, the operator of the UK’s largest passenger car fleet states. Justin Patterson, head of operations at Addison Lee, says: “We’re currently fitting around 5,000 fewer tyres per year than we did prior to introducing the first CrossClimate tyres.”

The new tyre is now available in 110/80ZR18 M/C TL (58W) front; and 150/65ZR18 M/C TL (69W) and 160/60ZR18 M/C TL (70W) rear. The street legal tyre was developed for road racing, and now expands with the latest sizes in K1 compound to classic racing.
