Stapleton’s SUV tyres to tackle tough conditions, market
The UK’s largest wholesaler, Stapleton’s acknowledges this growing interest in SUV tyres while adding that uncertainty in our domestic market as inflation rises, sluggish growth, and the reduced value of the pound are adding to the case for cheaper products in the SUV/4x4 segment. The wholesaler backs up Goodyear’s point that the current market has been good for premium brands, with demand for such products strong in the SUV/4x4 segment.

Earlier in the year, Tyres & Accessories visited the Goodyear Innovation Center Luxembourg, where the manufacturer focused on the current SUV and 4x4 segment. Growth in sales of these vehicles has been robust for a considerable period; Goodyear representatives cited IHS Automotive EMEA region figures that suggest sales of new SUVs are expected to exceed 6 million units in 2017, up from fewer than 4 million five years ago, with further growth projected to produce regional sales at 8 million new SUVs in 2022. The SUV/4x4 tyre market is, of course, following suit: in Europe (including Turkey), ETRMA Europool data projects sales of 18 million in 2017.

Bonn District Court and the higher Federal court of appeal in Cologne have rejected the application for a preliminary injunction against Ultra-Seal regarding the use of Ultra-Seal on the German market sought by the German tyre association BundesReifenVerband (BRV). According to the company, over the last few months, a large lobby had been set up by the BRV, which had been “proactively attacking Ultra-Seal users and the press with statements about Ultra-Seal being illegal on the German market on grounds of §36 of the StVZO (German Road Vehicle Registration Regulations) under ‘Richtlinien’ (guidelines) issued by the Bundesverkehrsministerium (Federal Transport Department)”. Ultra-Seal stated its counterarguments against these allegations in statement published by Tyres & Accessories’ German sister website, Reifenpresse on 23 May 2017.

Giti Tire has won its first European original equipment contract for the Volkswagen Group. The manufacturer will supply its GitiSynergyE1 for the Seat Ibiza in size 185/70R14 88H. Giti Tire Europe managing director for product technology, Stefan Fischer stated that the new approval “underlines our ambition for the OE segment,” in addition to the “outstanding work” of the company’s Hanover-based European R&D centre.

India’s Ministry of Finance has imposed an anti-dumping duty on truck and bus radial (TBR) tyres imported from China. The duty ranges from $245.35 - $452.33 per ton, according to a notification from the Central Board Excise and Customs (CBEC), and has been applied to “new pneumatic radial tyres with or without tubes and/or flap of rubber (including tubeless tyres) having nominal rim diameter code above 16 (inch)”.
