One Australian recycler’s technology is turning old aircraft tyres into bio jet fuel - Green Distillation Technologies (GDT), an Australian company was awarded a bronze medal two years ago in the Edison Awards, rated as the world’s top prize for innovation. The GDT technology is called destructive distillation and can recycle old aircraft tyres into oil, carbon and the steel wire cord, although usually their process is applied to recycling old car tyres into oil, carbon and steel with a typical 10 kg car tyre yielding 4 litres of oil, 4kg of carbon, 2kg of steel, a 70kg truck tyre providing 27 litres of oil, 28 kg of carbon, 15 kg of steel and 4 tonne oversize mining dump truck tyre yielding 1.6 tonnes of carbon, 0.8 tonne of steel and 1500 litres of oil.

In some countries, such as Germany and Switzerland, the rate levied depends on the number of axles a vehicle uses. Fleets whose routes take them to or through these regions are increasingly turning to solutions that enable them to run with two-axle trailers. Goodyear has now released a new tyre to meet this demand.

Schaeffler AG has announced that its automotive aftermarket business will be upgraded to full divisional status following a prolonged period of growth. Effective from the 1 January 2018, the Schaeffler Group will be comprised of three separate divisions – Automotive OEM, Industrial and the newly-created Automotive Aftermarket (AAM) – which will be run autonomously within Schaeffler from its headquarters in Langen, Germany.

Some companies celebrate their centenary with a giant birthday cake; Yokohama Rubber has done so by developing a tyre. Although described as a concept, the tyre will come to market this year – albeit just in Japan, in one size (205/55R16 91V) and only on a limited basis. The anniversary tyre is called the BluEarth-air EF21. Yokohama Rubber reports that it is based on the “most advanced technologies and the latest design technique for reducing tyres’ weight and environmental impact.” The BluEarth-air EF21 will be introduced to the world at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show 2017, which opens to the press tomorrow and to the public from 28 October.

The latest “premium tyre for the top tractor segment” from Vredestein will be launched at next month’s Agritechnica show. Apollo Vredestein hasn’t revealed what its new product is called, however it shares that the tyre is based on “ever-improving” VF (Very High Flexion) technology, and that its development drew upon on extensive research into the needs of tractor manufacturers and end users. The result, the tyre maker states, is a VF tyre that “sets higher standards in the market.”
