Turanza T005 roll-out simplifies touring market for Bridgestone
Bridgestone launched the new Turanza T005 in the second half of 2017, replacing its Turanza T001 EVO, and joining the innovative DriveGuard in covering the European car tyre market. The new tyre, which was developed and produced in Europe to offer motorists improved wet performance and fuel economy, combined with high mileage, is now available in a wide line-up that will eventually provide almost complete touring market coverage by 2019, with more than 140 sizes for 14’’ to 21’’ rims.

Yokohama adds runflat to flagship range, marks 40 years of Advan
In addition to its latest motorsport developments, Yokohama used the Autosport International show to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its flagship Advan car tyre range, launching a runflat version of the leading Advan Sport V105 tyre. Available in a number of key sizes from 16” – 20”, the Advan Sport V105 ZPS is designed as a replacement tyre for a number of rear wheel drive executive saloons fitted with runflat tyres as standard, the manufacturer states.

Continental streamlines solid tyre range, introduces ‘Plus’ compound
The rollout of a new Continental solid tyre range for industrial trucks began last month. This new line-up is available in four versions – SC20+, CS20+, CSEasy SC20+ and SH12+ - and all come with Continental’s new ‘Plus’ compound, which is said to combine the advantages of high mileage with low rolling resistance. Continental states it is also streamlining its solid tyre range, bringing benefits to customers with a more transparent, simplified choice of products.

For summer use, seven sizes Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3, all run-flat fitments, have been approved, along with three sizes of Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2. Winter fitments include two sizes of Goodyear Ultragrip 8 Performance and two sizes of Winter Sport 4D. All Goodyear and Dunlop tyres are * marked to indicate the approval from BMW Group as original equipment.

This initial supply deal covers the latest generation BMW X3, which debuted in November 2017 in North America and will be released gradually in markets around the world. Two sizes of Yokohama Advan Sport V105 will be fitted to the X3, 225/60R18 104W and 245/50R19 105W. The latter size features Yokohama Rubber’s run-flat technology.

Back in July 2016 a survey of tyre tread depth when brought in for replacement by safety organisation TyreSafe in collaboration with Highways England produced disturbing results. Of nearly 102,000 tyres checked from 810 British retailers almost a quarter were illegal for road use – the equivalent of 10 million potentially dangerous tyres. More worrying was the report that there’s an upward trend in the percentage of tyres with illegal tread depths on replacement (66% percent in 2015 and 70% in 2016). TyreSafe’s alarming prediction was that ‘higher numbers of dangerous and illegal tyres will be driven on the UK’s road’s in 2017’.

Existing agreements to supply Hankook tyres as original equipment on the Audi TT RS and the RS 5 Coupé have now been followed by an arrangement to supply the Ventus S1 evo² for fitment on the Audi RS 4 Avant. Hankook Tire appears to be supplying tyres for both the Audi’s 265/35 R 19 98Y XL standard fitment as well as the optional size 275/30 R 20 97Y XL. The Ventus S1 evo² tyres homologated for the RS 4 Avant feature Hankook’s ‘sound absorber’ noise reduction technology.

The news follows the initiation of anti-dumping proceedings on 11 August 2017 and anti-subsidy proceedings on 14 October 2017.
