UK demand for new light commercial vehicles (LCVs) grew by 21.0 per cent to reach 341,455 units in 2023, according to the latest figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). More businesses invested in fleet renewal every month compared with the year before – with a record number of zero emission vans joining Britain’s roads.

The UK new car market has recorded its best year since the pandemic as a strong December, up 9.8 per cent, wrapped up the 17th month of consecutive growth. 1.903 million new cars reached the road during 2023 – an increase of 17.9 per cent, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Recall for 477 Dunlop RoadSmart III tyres
Goodyear has recalled 477 potentially defective Dunlop motorcycle tyres. In a notification published by the European Commission, the tyre maker shares that the size 120/70ZR17 M/C (58W) Dunlop RoadSmart III tyres, which Goodyear manufactured between 21 August and 10 September 2023 and also between 13 and 26 November 2023, may contain a “manufacturing defect” that “could lead to a tread separation.”

To denote this exclusive tailoring, tyres that are approved or factory fitted as original equipment display a special marking on the sidewall. The best-known of these OE tyre designations include those for Porsche (N0, N1, ...), BMW (*) and Mercedes (MO), although other brands, from Alfa Romeo to Volvo, also have their own individual sidewall marking. We recently became aware of something new that flies – at least in part – in the face of this concept of original equipment tyres specially tailored to a specific vehicle model.

Continental is now offering an “entry-level solution” for fleets wishing to adopt digital tyre management. This solution centres around a new valve cap sensor that obtains data about tyre condition in a “very timesaving, simple, and manufacturer-independent manner.” The sensor simply screws onto a tyre valve and is compatible with commercial vehicle tyres from all major brands. It measures tyre pressure in real time and connects with ContiConnect receiver units, including phone apps.

Bridgestone says it has planted seeds for growth in the agricultural tyre market with the new VX-R Tractor and several original equipment approvals achieved in 2023. The manufacturer says its approach to developing products for the market segment has been defined by soil, sustainability, and measurable value for money. In 2023 it says more of its tyres were fitted as original equipment than ever before, most notably with John Deere and New Holland dealerships. As a result, it is heralding a “breakthrough” in market share and farmers’ awareness of its brands, particularly for the Bridgestone VX-Tractor range.
