Japanese producer Yokohamas high performance tyres received top scores in the latest competitive tyre tests in the German motoring press. Magazines auto, motor & sport, sport auto and rallye racing emphasised the extraordinary performance of the AVS Sport and the TW 1 on wet and dry surface.

The Venezuelan subsidiary of Ford has said that it will no longer fit Firestone tyres as OE on its Lazer vehicle and 350 truck. Goodyear tyres will be used instead. Bridgestone/Firestone says that this represents only a 2 per cent loss of sales in the Venezuelan market.

At the INTERMOT – the international exhibition for motorcycles in Munich – the German Tyre Manufacturer Reifenwerk Heidenau has introduced a winter tyre for Scooters. For higher grip under winter conditions, the so-called Snowtex features textile fibres in the tread which emerge from the rubber surface after 300 to 600 kilometres driving. Therefore Heidenau suggests changing to winter tyres some weeks before the cold part of the year begins.

Cooper Tire & Rubber is cutting back on 1,100 jobs and scaling back, or shutting some 18 plants world-wide. Cutbacks at US plants in Michigan, North Carolina and Texas do not appear to affect tyre manufacture. Lay-offs at European plants have still to be confirmed and would be undertaken in consultation with employee representatives. The cutbacks come alongside announcements of record third quarter profits.
