It has been a little parky outside these last few days, but another sign of winter’s approach is the publication of comparative tests for specialised cold weather tyres. German motoring magazines Auto Straßenverkehr and auto, motor und sport (ams) have jointly evaluated ten winter SUV tyres in size 235/55 R18. The results of the two tests differ slightly as Auto Straßenverkehr looked at purchase price while ams did not, but this factor didn’t affect the final table ranking.

As a kind of search for the best SUV tyre solution, AutoBild Allrad pitted seven models from the same manufacturer – in this case Pirelli – against each other. The test specifically compared 255/55 R19 products on dry and wet roads, including their respective aquaplaning safety as a separate sub-discipline, as well as in winter conditions, off-road use or in terms of their environmental properties. “There is no one tyre that can do everything,” was the final conclusion.

The tyre manufacturer said it will invest about 1.464 billion yuan (about £160 million; €180 million) to add 20,000 giant engineering radial tyre production capacity. Through the new project, the tyre manufacturer is trying to “further optimise the product structure, seize the high-end market, and increase market share.”

During the same period, volume is expected to climb to 871,000 units.
