Exide introduces 5-minute battery test app
Exide Technologies has launched an app to aid workshops when testing batteries. It enables technicians to analyse battery test results and provide customers with battery replacement options within five minutes. Exide notes that as issues requiring replacement may be discovered in more than 20 per cent of tested batteries, using the app opens up a “valuable new revenue stream” for workshops, and helping motorists avoid unexpected failures. It adds that this solution is the first of its kind on the market.

New Firestone Performer Extra farm tyre offers ‘20% longer tyre life’
Firestone has launched the new Performer Extra farm tyre for the European market. Based on the Firestone Performer 85 and 70, the new tyre adds an enhanced wear resistance compound that extends the tyre’s life by 20 per cent over its predecessors. The tyre achieved this result in the controlled lab accelerated ageing testing conducted at Bridgestone’s R&D Centre. Its extended life helps to reduce the tyre’s environmental footprint, as well as cutting down on long-term operational costs and improving business efficiency.

Check all batteries, says Yuasa as MOT surge begins
We have all read dire warnings in the press and online about the possible implications of the six-month extension to MOTs and of possible bottlenecks and logjams as everybody leaves it to the last minute to get their vehicles tested. As lockdown measures ease, the demand for routine servicing, repairs and MOTs is already dramatically increasing. Yuasa are encouraging garages to introduce a simple battery check as part of their MOT and service schedules to identify if the vehicle’s battery has been damaged due to reduced usage. At the height of the Coronavirus pandemic, it is estimated that around 70 per cent of the UK’s cars remained immobile.

Tyre recycling and energy generation – why the time is now
Early in 2020 the UK government suggested a tentative plan to ban the export of all end of life tyres (ELTs). The timing was unfortunate, with the challenges of the rest of 2020 becoming increasingly apparent at the start of spring. However, with strict recycling, energy from waste, and environmental targets to meet over the next twenty years or so, many companies are pressing ahead in raising awareness and innovating within the broad recycling sector. ELTs represent a particularly important part of the new era in recycling introduced by the UK’s Environment Bill, not least because of new and incoming measures internal and external against used and end of life tyre exports, a popular, yet often damaging solution to the problem. Rory Hughes, technical director at IRR Waste 2 Energy, and a waste and recycling expert with more than 35 experience in the industry, told Tyrepress why adopting a more holistic approach to tyre recycling is the way forward.
