German magazine auto motor und sport (ams) has tested ten brands of winter tyre in the popular small car size 195/55 R16 H, and none of them were dreadful – but none received top marks, either. The best performance in the current test was achieved by the Bridgestone Blizzak LM005. It shares podium space with the Continental WinterContact TS 870 and Vredestein Wintrac.

Pirelli is partnering with Geotab, a global leader in connected transportation. The new partnership sees Pirelli’s Cyber Fleet system available on the Geotab Marketplace. The new integrated offer, which aims to assist in improving fleets’ operating efficiency and sustainability, will be rolled out initially in key European markets before being extended to the United States, Canada and Brazil, Pirelli said.

Nearly three in ten electric cars (29 per cent) at the at the 2021 International IAA Mobility Show in Munich fit Pirelli P Zero or Scorpion tyres. Pirelli is equipping these ranges with its new Elect technology for cars with zero or low emissions, some of which are among those at the IAA show. Pirelli’s Cinturato P7 tyres are also at the show on the BMW 320e hybrid and 3 Series models.

Continental has launched the SportContact 7, the latest in its ultra-high performance tyre line. The manufacturer will offer an initial run of 42 sizes for rim diameters between 19 and 23 inches with expansions due over the next year. The tyre is oriented towards handling and high mileage, with safety at its core. Compared to the previous sixth-generation model, itself a multi-test winning product for this segment in the six years since its launch, Conti says it has improved track performance by 10 per cent, wet braking distances have been reduced by 8 per cent, dry braking is 6 per cent shorter, and mileage has increased by 17 per cent (according to tests on the size 245/30 R20). Handling and grip in the wet and dry are also significantly improved, Conti says. The tyre’s C-grade rolling resistance label score also places it among the top-rated premium brand U-UHP tyres in this metric.

Demand for electric cars has continued to surge even during a quiet August ahead of the registration plate change. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) figures show that even as new car registrations fell by -22.0 per cent, demand for battery electric (BEV), hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles rose 32.2, 45.7 and 72.1 per cent respectively. Overall, the UK new car market is up 20.3 per cent versus Covid-hit 2020, though the pandemic remains a blight on the market due in part to chip shortages.

In 2015, Michelin disrupted the all-season tyre market with the launch of the CrossClimate - a tyre that approached year-round performance from a different direction. Now, following the launch its successor (the CrossClimate 2) in the US at the end of 2020, the worlds largest tyremaker has released a new European market-orientated version which builds on the already impressive performance of the first generation and tunes the concept demonstrated by the US edition for the European market. For example, according to Michelin, the Cross Climate 2 delivers a 10% reduction in rolling resistance when compared to its best-selling predecessor thanks to a Cool Running Sidewall designed to improve fuel efficiency or electric vehicle battery range... amongst other enhancements.
