2024 marks 50 years of Bulldog and 20 years of Bridgestone partnership
The Bulldog operation was founded in 1974 as part of the Sleaford Tyre Company Group and first supplied retreads to Bridgestone in the mid-1990s, before Bridgestone purchased it outright in 2005. A significant part of Bulldog’s recent history is made up of an increasingly close collaboration with Bridgestone. To be more specific, the two companies started working together in 1992, when Bulldog began making test tyres for Bridgestone. By 1995, Bulldog had become a major Bridgestone retreading partner. 10 years later, the working relationship became closer still when Bridgestone bought Bulldog. And next year market the 20th anniversary of Bridgestone’s Bulldog ownership. In the intervening years, Bridgestone global bought leading pre-cure retreading franchise, Bandag. Meanwhile, in the UK, Bridgestone grew to a position of market leadership in the bus tyre segment around 2017.

On 15 April The Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. (YRC) broke ground for its new consumer/light truck tyre plant at the Alianza Industrial Park in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. The event was attended by state and local officials, as well as management from Yokohama companies, including YRC chairman and CEO Masataka Yamishi; Yokohama Corporation North America (YCNA) CEO Shinichi Takimoto; and Yokohama Tire Corporation (YTC) president and CEO Jeff Barna.

Goodyear introduces new RL-5K OTR tyre with three-star load capacity
Goodyear has launched the new three-star RL-5K Off-the-Road (OTR) tyre for large wheel loaders and wheel dozers. The RL-5K is Goodyears newest radial OTR tyre in the 45/65R45 tyre size and is constructed to withstand the air pressure necessary to deliver an increased three-star load capacity, which translates to a 16 per cent increase in load carrying capacity, based on Tyre & Rim Association data versus RL-5K two-star predecessor in this size The RL-5K with three-star capacity also features a deep, 250-level durable tread to deliver cut resistance and traction in severe underfoot conditions.

Qingdao Doublestar confirms Kumho acquisition details
Following the news that it will take control of Kumho as the largest shareholder, Qingdao Doublestar has released details of how it is working to indirectly hold 45 per cent of Kumho’s shares by issuing shares and paying cash in order to obtain strategic assets. After the complex transaction is completed, Qingdao Doublestar will control Kumho. Prior to this transaction, 45 per cent of Kumho was controlled by the wider Doublestar group rather than the tyre manufacturer Qingdao Doublestar itself.

New ContiConnect Lite app version – a ‘gateway into digital OTR tyre management’
Continental has launched a new version of its ContiConnect Lite app. The digital tyre management software creates a bridge between tyre sensors fitted to tyres either retroactively or increasingly at the factory and certain features of digitalised tyre management. The app can now be used on tyres with an integrated Gen2 sensor. Beginning in 2024, Continental has been delivering its off-the-road (OTR) radial tyres with a Bluetooth-enabled sensor ex-factory.

Rear-facing red flashing lamps approved for tyre roadside assistance and recovery workers
The tyre roadside assistance and rescue and recovery industry have been granted permission to use rear-facing red flashing lamps. The DfT said it was considering such plans in October 2023. Prior to the latest decision, the only industries able to use red-flashing lamps were government agencies as well as Police and National Highways Traffic Officers. The final stage is a wider consultation and for the principles of the final document to be shared with the Department for Transport.
