The National Tyre Distributors Association held its millennium conference in Portugal. Before the conference got under way, delegates were given the news that RapidFit had applied to join the association. The 300-strong chain of Ford dealers is the first of the vehicle dealerships to enter into membership. The keynote speaker at the conference was Sir Tom Farmer, one of whose points was that the association should consider becoming more commercial and explore the possibility of setting up a buying group for members. Other speakers explored the themes of the impact of e-commerce and the internet on tyre retailing and what tyre dealers can do to take advantage of the opportunities which are liable to arise in the future. The impact of legislation – existing and forthcoming – was another topic, including the implications of the proposed End of Life Vehicle Directive. There was a different format for the second day, when delegates broke into groups to discuss the three subjects of scrap tyre disposal, e-commerce and the changing face of tyre retailing, reflecting the previous day’s subjects. The group chairmen then reported back to the meeting and the conclusions were presented to the NTDA in order to guide the association as to its future strategic direction in these areas. Debate was lively and everyone agreed that the new format had been a resounding success.

Munichs Intermot has become the main fair for motorbikes, the supplying industry and for dealers involved in motorbike tyres. Although the German market for motorcycles declined by 7 % (Europe: + 7 %) in the first half of this year, once again, more than 150,000 visitors from 84 countries (1998: 150,368 from 80 countries) came to visit the New Munich Trade Fair Centre from 13 to 17 September to find out about the products and services of 1,033 exhibitors and 56 additionally represented companies from 35 countries (1998: 836 exhibitors from 33 countries). As in the premiere event in 1998, the proportion of trade visitors was approximately 35 %, with more than a fifth of their number coming from abroad. The largest contingents of trade visitors from abroad came from within the European Union (67 %) and the rest of Europe. Visitors interest encompassed all areas of the fair, with the top favourites being motorised vehicles (72 %), parts and accessories for motorised two-wheelers (47 %) and clothing and rider equipment. Therefore many companies from the tyre business were among the exhibitors in Munich: Cooper-Avon, Continental, Dunlop, Metzeler/Pirelli and Michelin showed their latest products and the tyre trade was present too. And there were a lot of new tyres to discover. For example a winter tyre for scooters, or Continentals move into the radial segment, seven new tyres from Michelin and many more premieres for the upcoming motorbike season 2001. NEUE REIFENZEITUNG reviews all the news from the show in its October issue.

Continue Readingteam Reifen-Union Cooperates with VRG
The two cooperatives team Reifen-Union/Top Service Team KG (currently about 400 outlets) and Vereinigte ReifenFachhändler GmbH (VRG; currently about 200 outlets) have agreed a far-reaching cooperation on all levels, including the servicing of large customers and fleet management. An important ingredient is the immediate creation of a company called Team Reifen Partner GmbH + Co. KG (TRP), which will gradually incorporate both VRG and new companies as members. VRG members will still have to approve this measure officially in a meeting at the end of January. The team group, to date with a membership of 25 regionally successful tyre traders and as such the number one marketing group in the tyre market, will thus embrace also smaller and medium-sized tyre trading companies, whose members have already given their official consent to the plan. The new group based on the team/VRG cooperatives with more than 600 outlets is set to expand its base. An essential precondition for tyre dealers with local and regional operations and aspirations also to serve trans-regional customers, especially fleets and leasing companies, is full geographical coverage throughout Germany. At the same time the new partners want to coordinate their procurement and stocking policy and improve their purchasing terms and conditions.
