Dakar 2016 winners used Goodyear tyres
The De Rooy truck team recently won the Dakar 2016 rally truck category, driving on standard Goodyear ORD off-the-road truck tyres. The event, which concluded on Saturday 16 January 2016 covered approximately 9000 kilometres in 13 days on the toughest terrain that Argentina and Bolivia can offer, the Dakar – or the ‘Odyssey’ as it is known – is acknowledged as the world’s toughest race.

Pirelli will bring its P Zero White medium, P Zero Yellow soft and P Zero Red supersoft compounds to the fourth round of the 2016 Formula One season, which takes place at the Sochi Autorom between 28 April and 1 May. Pirelli has decided that a set of the medium and soft must be used at some point in the race; each driver must have both these sets available for the race, and must use at least one of them.

The BBC has ended its television coverage of Formula One early as part of measures to plug a £150 million annual gap in its finances identified by the corporation’s director general. The BBC regained the broadcast rights to F1 in 2009, and agreed a shared package with Sky Sports during a previous round of cost-saving measures in 2012. 10 of the 2015 season’s grands prix were broadcast live on the BBC, with extensive highlights of the remaining nine races. The radio commentary rights – currently held by BBC Radio 5 live – have been extended until 2021.

Under a two-year agreement starting in 2016, Pirelli will become the exclusive tyre supplier to the FIA ERC (European Rally Championship) Junior Championship. Under the deal signed with promoter Eurosport Events, the tyre maker will provide rubber designed specifically for latest R2-specification cars, namely its P Zero RK for the championship’s asphalt rounds and the Scorpion K range for gravel rounds. The Sottozero Ice is likely to be used on the season-opening Rally Liepāja.

Northern Irish driver Jon Armstrong beat off nine other finalists to win the Vatanen Touch award at the Drive Dmack Fiesta shoot-out today. The 21-year-old is rewarded with a funded prize drive in next year’s Drive Dmack Fiesta Trophy which takes place over five FIA World Rally Championship rallies. He will drive an M-Sport-prepared Ford Fiesta R2T.

Dmack has extended its support for British rallying with the creation of the Dmack Junior BRC category. The tyre brand will offer a subsidised prize drive in the 2017 Drive Dmack Fiesta Trophy, worth £60,000, to the winning driver. Dmack stated that the series creates a career ladder to help bring young drivers from club rallying level in the UK to the top of the FIA World Rally Championship. As part of the package, the Junior BRC category will be supplied by Dmack tyres throughout the 2016 season.

Following extensive testing in Spain and Morocco, the 2012 Dakar race-winning De Rooy team has chosen Goodyear ORD off-the-road truck tyres for the three Iveco trucks it has entered into ‘the Odyssey’, the 2016 Dakar race. The tyres to be used are size 375/90R22.5 Goodyear ORD tyres. This size is unique to Goodyear and replaces the 14.00R20 fitment the De Rooy team previously used. The size 375/90R22.5 tyre retains the same overall diameter and width as the 14.00R20 but the larger rim diameter provides greater brake clearance, thereby improving heat resistance.
