Michelin to introduce Pilot Sport FW2 WRC rain tyre
Michelin will introduce a new iteration of its FIA World Rally Championship full wet tyre, developed for use on asphalt rounds, at the ADAC Rallye Deutschland on 18-21 August. The new Pilot Sport FW2 (FW stands for “full wet”) features a higher water clearance capacity and a contact patch double the size of its predecessor. The German event is the first of four consecutive sealed-surface events, which also include October’s RallyRACC Catalunya-Rally de España.

Pirelli said that a number of different strategies were in play at the German Grand Prix, with mostly three stops seen and many teams splitting their race strategies. Mercedes was one of these teams, with race winner Lewis Hamilton alternating the supersoft and soft tyre. Polesitter Nico Rosberg started with two sets of supersoft and then ended the race on two sets of soft.

Pirelli’s testing programme for its new wider P Zero Formula One tyres for 2017 has begun at Fiorano in Italy. Sebastian Vettel piloted a Ferrari SF15-T specifically modified to simulate the new aero rules and to accommodate tyres in 2017 size. The four-time world champion is testing on 1 August before handing the car over to Haas F1 driver Esteban Gutierrez on Tuesday 2 August.

The World Rally Champion may return to a control tyre, but this won’t occur next year. According to autosport.com, FIA rally director Jarmo Mahonen says a single tyre competition is not on the cards for 2017. “Its the normal business of the promoter to investigate these things,” he shared. “But it cant happen next year.” The publication adds that Mahonen hasn’t ruled out a control tyre for future seasons.

Pirelli has announced the compound selection it will supply to the final two grands prix of the 2016 season in Brazil and Abu Dhabi. The exclusive tyre supplier has announced nominations for “long-haul events” – those outside Europe, and therefore further from its distribution hub –14 weeks in advance, in accordance with the latest set of F1 tyre regulations. All five of Pirelli’s slick compounds will be available to teams at the final two events, with Interlagos seeing the harder end of the scale, and Yas Marina the softer.

As of this year, the Sepang 12 Hours race in Malaysia will run on control tyres supplied by a single manufacturer, and Yokohama Rubber has been selected for this role. All competitors will take to the circuit in vehicles fitted with the Yokohama Advan A005 race tyre or, depending on conditions, the Advan A006 wet weather tyre.

The six hour race follows the double-points Le Mans 24 Hours where Dunlop saw considerable success in the LMP2 class. Pirelli will supply its P Zero Red supersoft, Yellow soft and White medium compounds to Formula One’s teams at the recently resurfaced Hungaroring. The tyre manufacturer says that the circuit “could not be any more different” following the previous race at Silverstone; the tight and twisty Hungaroring has been described as being like an oversized go-kart track, while weather conditions can range from extremely hot (a common occurrence) to rain (which was the case two years ago, as well as 2011).

Testing of Pirelli’s wider 2017 Formula One tyres is scheduled to begin early next month, and although a 2017 car isn’t available for these tests, Pirelli expects they will nevertheless give a good indication of tyre performance. Speaking with Formula1.com, Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery shared that the tyre maker is aiming for much less tyre degradation next year, along with a wider operating window.
