British GP: Raikkonen incident caused by external damage, not “tyre issues”
An analysis of the tyre that caused problems for Kimi Raikkonen in the British Grand Prix has found “no issues connected with the tyre itself nor with its use,” shares Pirelli. A close inspection of the soft compound tyre fitted to the front left wheel of Raikkonen’s Ferrari revealed specific damage in two places at the edge of the belt close to the internal shoulder area, however no damage was found in any other area of the tyre, and no signs of fatigue were evident in the belt and structure.

Formula One comes to the UK this weekend with the British Grand Prix, and Pirelli has opted to bring softer tyres to Silverstone than originally planned. During this halfway-point round in the 2017 F1 calendar, teams will work with the P Zero White medium, P Zero Yellow soft and P Zero Red supersoft tyres rather than the hard, medium and soft tyres initially nominated. Pirelli comments that the decision to focus on the softer end of the compound spectrum was taken after examining information gained from previous races. This will be the first time the supersoft compound has taken to the track at the British Grand Prix.

Dunlop’s Le Mans 24 Hours 2017 is one to remember with records broken, overall race laps led, and overall podiums in addition to the more typical class wins and podiums, in a race with high temperatures testing cars and drivers. Track temperatures exceeded 50 degrees towards the end of Sunday’s race in France’s Sarthe region.

Last year, Dunlop returned to GT racing in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), taking the Teams’ and Drivers’ titles, five wins and nine podium finishes with Aston Martin Racing. The experience the tyre maker gained, however, is of limited help, as a complete change in tyre regulations was introduced for the 2017 season. These changes place fresh demands upon the tyres used and bring different criteria for Dunlop’s tyre designers and engineers to focus on.

Dunlop has released a new video with senior engineer, racing car tyre development, Vincent van Goor explaining its tyre development ahead of this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours. A record number of LMP2 cars will compete on the manufacturer’s rubber – 22 of the 25 entrants. All of the cars are racing on the La Sarthe track for the first time courtesy of new regulations for 2017. The race starts at 15:00 CEST on Saturday 17 June.

Alloy brand ATS Wheels, distributed in the UK by Wolfrace Wheels, has been confirmed as the official wheel supplier for the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM). ATS hardware will be found under the arches of the cars of all three OEMs competing in the series; Mercedes, Audi and BMW. ATS will supply 12x18in (front) and 13x18in (back) aluminium forged wheels, produced using a special alloy selected for its extreme strength and lightweight.
