McGovern wins Yokohama-backed SEAT Supercup Ireland Championship
Rod McGovern won overall victory in the Yokohama-backed, 2017 Seat Supercup Ireland Championship this weekend, having finished runner-up in the last two seasons. Driving for Mick Merrigan Motorsport, McGovern clinched the title at Kirkstown Motor Racing Circuit when he took a fourth place finish in round ten of the series, securing an unassailable lead with two races of the season still remaining.

On one of the most demanding circuits for tyres Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won Formula One’s Belgian Grand Prix ahead of Sebastian Vettel after what was effectively a sprint race in the final laps. The race was turned on its head by a safety car on lap 30, which gave drivers the opportunity for a ‘free’ pit stop. Hamilton, in the lead, ran the soft tyre for his final stint, while Vettel went for the ultrasoft: theoretically more than one second per lap faster.

The Belgian Grand Prix gets under way in two days’ time, and Pirelli will bring its P Zero Purple ultrasoft tyres for the first time to Spa-Francorchamps, together with the P Zero Red supersoft and P Zero Yellow soft. This is the sixth time this year that the three softest tyres in the Pirelli Formula One range have been selected – Pirelli says their use in Belgium represents “a more aggressive choice.” And as the weekend’s forecast includes rain, there’s a good chance we’ll also see the Cinturato Green intermediate or Cinturato Blue full wet at some point during proceedings.
