Michelin renews Formula E partnership, working on all-new tyre
Three seasons of exclusive tyre supply to the FIA Formula E Championship are already under Michelin’s belt and a fourth begins tomorrow. We can look forward to at least four more years of Michelin supply to the electric race series as well; the tyre maker and the FIA have announced an extension of the supply agreement up to the end of the 2020/21 season. Furthermore, while the Pilot Sport EV2 tyre launched at the start of season three returns for 2017/18, the French manufacturer confirms it is already working on tyres for the new-look next generation car, which will make its debut a year from now in season five.

Testing of Pirelli’s 2018 Formula 1 tyres took place at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit over a two-day period this week, and following the conclusion of proceedings the tyre maker is proud to report that four-time and current champion Lewis Hamilton has declared the new PZero Pink hypersoft tyre the “best tyre Pirelli has ever made.”

Since the Moto2 category of the F.I.M. Road Racing World Championship was launched in 2010, it has known only one tyre supplier. The same applies to the Moto3 class, which began in 2012 – both have run solely on Dunlop tyres since their inauguration. This status as official tyre supplier for both classes – which form an integral part of MotoGP race weekends – has now been extended to cover the 2018 to 2020 seasons. In addition to remaining as tyre supplier, Dunlop will also continue to promote its #ForeverForward Award.

Changes such as those seen this year won’t be a hallmark of the Formula 1 tyre range Pirelli offers teams in 2018, however the tyre maker says this doesn’t mean it hasn’t been busy. In line with its aim of ensuring an average of two pit stops at most races, two extra compounds and sidewall colours will join the Pirelli Formula 1 tyre range in 2018. The line-up previewed by the tyre maker at last weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix also includes fresh constructions, compounds and working ranges.

Now, 11 MXGP wins later, the relationship continues with the Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s signing of an extended Technical Partnership with Dunlop for the 2018, 2019 and 2020 MXGP seasons.

The Goodyear Tyre & Rubber Company has renewed its support of NASCAR with a multi-year sponsorship agreement that ensures Goodyear is the exclusive tyre of NASCARs top three national series. The newly signed agreement continues Goodyears designation as the Official Tyre of NASCAR and extends an uninterrupted relationship that started in 1954. Goodyear and NASCARs six decade-long relationship is one of the longest-running sponsor programs in any major sport.

Elfyn Evans and Dan Barritt powered their M-Sport World Rally Team Ford Fiesta WRC to a stage victory on the final day, securing their highest championship finish of fifth and becoming the third highest scorers of stage wins this season.

With the 6 Hours of Bahrain, the current FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season drew to a close. Reflecting on an “amazing season of racing,” Dunlop has congratulated Aston Martin Racing and Vaillante Rebellion for their class victories. Both raced on Dunlop tyres in open tyre classes; Aston Martin Racing won the FIA World Endurance Trophy for LMGTE Am Teams and Vaillante Rebellion won the FIA World Endurance Trophy for LMP2 Teams. Each of the teams began the event leading the standings and both claimed race victories in Bahrain to secure the crowns.

In 2017, Dmack again ran a WRC car programme to generate brand exposure and demonstrate the performance of its products. Following what it calls its “most successful” season in the FIA World Rally Championship to date – a year that included highlights such as Dmack-shod drivers leading four events and a maiden overall victory in the Wales Rally GB – the company has decided to take a break from fielding its own WRC car. Next year, the focus – and funds – will instead shift to product development. Dmack also intends to take advantage of the many commercial opportunities it sees by expanding its customer base in WRC2, ERC and other regional and national championships.
