Avon tyre production restarts with Nova Motorsport in Portugal
Nova Motorsport has produced the first Avon Motorsport ACB9 Formula Ford and Avon Traction Mileage tyre for classic Land Rovers at its new manufacturing facility in Portugal. The plant, acquired from Camac in May 2024, is equipped with moulds and manufacturing equipment from the former Avon factory in Melksham.

At the end of 2022, Goodyear extended its supplier/sponsorship contract for US motorsport series NASCAR, but at that time did not provide any further details on the duration of the agreement concluded with the eponymous National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. A new GlobalData report on this motorsport competition, titled The Business of NASCAR 2024, indicates that the tyre maker’s NASCAR commitment extends from 2023 to 2027. Whats more, the data analysis specialist states that Goodyear’s NASCAR sponsorship will cost the company US$25 million a year during this period.

Durham University navigated its 5kWh three-wheeled asymmetrical catamaran up the 1.16m track, becoming the first fully solar powered car to ever complete the route. Meanwhile, the Indy Autonomous Challenge’s (IAC) self-driving AV-24 race car pushed the boundaries of autonomous technology, setting the record for the fastest autonomous hillclimb at Goodwood. Both projects were assisted by specially designed Bridgestone solutions.

Pirelli will bring its three softest compound Formula 1 P Zero tyres to the grands prix scheduled for September; Italy (1 September). Azerbaijan (15 September), and Singapore (22 September). The C3 will be the P Zero White hard, the C4 P Zero Yellow medium and C5 P Zero Red soft. These tyres are the same as those supplied in 2023.

Pirelli has announced its tyre allocations for the ninth round of the World Rally Championship season, Rally Finland. In Finland, the prime is the new-generation soft compound Scorpion KX WRC SB, featuring a revised construction that ensures greater durability and resistance compared to its predecessor, while delivering the same level of performance. The option tyre is the hard compound Scorpion KX WRC HB, suitable for more abrasive surfaces and longer stages. Crews can use 28 of the prime and eight of the option tyres. The number of options can be increased to 12, which reduces the number of primes by four.

Moto2 and Moto3 riders will return to the track at Silverstone’s British Grand Prix (2-4 August) following a four-week break. Tyre supplier Pirelli will help riders tackle the 5.9km track, the longest on the calendar and one of the fastest, with an increased allocation of eight front tyres for both classes, while Moto3 will be supplied with six hard C1096 rear development compound tyres. Pirelli’s vast knowledge of Silverstone has informed this decision, according to motorcycle racing director Giorgio Barbier, with its data showing the high lateral load put on tyres by the circuit’s faster corners.

Andrea Crugnola won in a Citroen C3 running on Pirelli rally tyres for the second year running at the Rally di Roma Capitale, a round of the Fia European Rally Championship and the Italian Asphalt Championship. As well as Crugnola, who drove a strategically sound rally, there was another Pirelli runner on the podium, Simone Campedelli, who finished second in a Skoda Fabia thus ensuring the Italian Championship battle is still wide open.

The result of the Belgian grand prix was decided long after the chequered flag, as Mercedes’ George Russell was disqualified for an underweight car handing teammate Lewis Hamilton victory, but that didn’t stop exclusive tyre supplier Pirelli hailing the race as “one of the best… of the past few years.” Mario Isola – Pirelli director of motorsport, said: “It’s been quite a while since Formula 1 has put on such a show and it’s unusual to see a race where the outcome is so uncertain, with the top three within just over a second of one another and the first six finishers, all of whom could legitimately claim to have aimed for the win or at least the podium, all finishing within under 10 seconds. It’s a shame the race result had to be changed but, as even Mercedes agreed, the rule regarding weight is very clear.”

The FIM’s 2024 Awards ceremony will be held in Palma, the capital city of the Spanish island of Mallorca, on Saturday 7 December. The occasion will celebrate all the 2024 FIM World Champions and recognise the 120th anniversary of the international motorsport body. The event will be held at the Palma Convention Centre, the same venue that will welcome the FIM General Assembly on Friday 6 December, when representatives from the many national federations around the globe will cast their votes on a number of important matters. The following evening there will be the glittering 2024 Awards ceremony to honour and celebrate the achievements of an international cast of motorcycling World Champions.
