The FIA and Pirelli have renewed their Formula One tyre supply contract, confirming the Italian tyre manufacturer’s presence in the series for the next three seasons. The decision ends speculation about the immediate future of the tyre supplier in F1, and will provide some stability during a transition period for F1’s rules and regulations. However, Pirelli has also announced the decision to introduce two new mandatory rules, designed in conjunction with the FIA and F1 teams to prevent the recurrence of the tyre safety issues most prevalent at Silverstone’s British grand prix in 2013.

Motorsport’s popularity as a conduit for tyre manufacturers’ marketing spend continues to thrive as aspirational brands from the far east seek to increase brand recognition and the perception of quality. The Evergreen brand, a relative newcomer to the tyre scene having gone into production at the Jinyu PCR factory in 2009, has become the latest to announce a move into the UK motorsport scene, tying up a sponsorship deal with car racing debutant Dan Zelos in the Ginetta Junior Championship. Evergreen says it is seeking to accelerate its expansion by following in the wheel tracks of some of its commercial rivals by taking its first steps into the high-octane world of motorsport through the partnership with promising Norfolk-based teenager.

Milltek will offer a talented race driver a fully supported drive in its VW Cup Golf for the 2014 season, the exhaust manufacturer has revealed. Launching the search at the 2014 Autosport show between 9 and 12 January, Milltek will host a test day in February, having teamed up with long-term technical partners KPM to create a vehicle to compete in the APR VW Cup, based on the company’s previously successful Golf Time Attack car.

The Federation Internationale de I’Automobile (FIA) Land Speed Records Commission has homologated Continental Tire the Americas’ world speed records for both ten kilometres and ten miles from a standing start. The tyre maker, in conjunction with Michael Shank Racing, Ford, Roush Yates Engines and International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) set out to break the records at Daytona International Speedway on 9 October 2013; the attempt was made by Colin Braun, who drove a Ford EcoBoost-powered Daytona Prototype (DP) fitted with Continental’s ExtremeContact DR (Dry, Race) tyres.

Exclusive tyre supplier to Formula One, Pirelli has issued a response to a deleted tweet by the Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg following a high-speed tyre failure in Bahrain. The manufacturer explained that there were “a number of prototypes, which were completely innovative in terms of structure and compounds” as part of its development plans for the 2014 tyre range.

The British brand, manufactured in China by Shandong Yongtai, has announced the signing of Estonia’s Ott Tänak, who will join Finn Jari Ketomaa in a pair of Ford Fiesta R5 rally cars as the newly-formed Drive Dmack world rally team starts its campaign. Dmack has also announced a new range of rally tyres, as well as an extension of 60 sizes to its PCR range, coming in 2014.
