Giti returns to Pikes Peak after Tajima’s 2013 win
Giti Tire is returning to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on 29 June after playing a key role in last years electric division victory by Nobuhiro Monster Tajima and his ‘Monster Sport E-Runner Pikes Peak Special.’ Last year, Tajima switched from Falken to Giti tyres for the Pikes Peak event and set a new electric record of 9:46.530 last year after Giti Tire engineers hand cut tread grooves into the tyres after the road became wet from a 30-minute rainfall – a measure the driver said gave him much-needed grip. For the 2014 event, he will compete in a vehicle that is based on last year’s machine but incorporates a number of performance enhancements, including specially designed 17-inch GitiCompete GTR1 slicks (340/710-18) in place of the 20-inch version used last year.

A series of karting events sponsored by Hull’s Tyremen will conclude with a grand prix finale on Thursday 15 May, having raised around £20,000 for various charities according to Tyremen director Phillip Carlin. The S1 Tyremen Grand Prix started in May last year, and since then ten heats have been held at Hull Karting, with businesses including Smailes Goldie, Sargent Electrical, St Stephen’s, and Royal Bank of Scotland all competing. Organised by The Smile Foundation, drivers raced on behalf of a charity for a slice of the final funds, with each charity coming away with a share.

The Spanish grand prix at Barcelona allowed Pirelli to showcase the solidity of its 2014 Formula One rubber, supporting the manufacturer’s assertion that its tyres would not repeat the 2013 specification’s well-publicised problems. As one of the season’s most demanding tracks, the 2013 Barcelona grand prix was won on a four-stop strategy; in 2014, eight of the top 10 finishers completed the 66 laps with two.

Honda took two wins over the World Superbike Championship weekend at Imola, as Briton Jonathan Rea moved into first place in the overall standings, taking the Pirelli Best Lap awards in both races. While the existing soft compound Diablo Superbike tyre was used to great effect, Pirelli also regarded the meeting as a successful first outing for the new SC1 S1699 compound EVO fitment, with many riders in this category opting to use the tyre.

Addressing speculation about Pirelli’s interest in MotoGP tyre supply after Bridgestone withdraws, Paul Hembery indicates that the Italian tyre maker isn’t pushing for selection. Crash.net reports that the WSBK series remains Pirelli’s focus. “Were heavily involved with superbikes and the promoter is the same, so we are bound to have been in discussions, but theres no plans at the moment to do anything,” commented Hembery at the Formula One Spanish Grand Prix. “Our motorcycle team are reviewing that, but I have to say as a company we are very happy with our involvement in superbikes.”

It has now been sole tyre supplier to the World Superbike championship for more than ten years and is also partner to national championships, including British Superbike. But is Pirelli looking to further extend its two-wheel motorsport participation? Bikesportnews.com says it is. Matteo Giusti, the tyre maker’s racing and product communication manager, told BSN that Pirelli is currently discussing its “next steps regarding the possibility to make an offer for MotoGP.” He added that Michelin and Dunlop have also expressed interest in supplying the championship, however at present nothing has been decided.

Developed and tested in the World Endurance and national championships, Pirelli is supplying a new World Superbike tyre to premier class EVO riders. The tyre uses a very soft performance compound that, according to the supplier, should offer an advantage, especially at high temperatures. The fourth round at Imola will see Pirelli supply the new SCO EVO compound to the premier class, while debuting the standard SC0 compound in the Supersport class.

A new British Superbike lap record at Oulton Park capped a successful May bank holiday weekend for Pirelli’s two-wheel motorsport tyre supply agreements. Pirelli supplied riders in the first races of the German and Dutch Superbike national championships, and was the tyre supplier to the winner of the Alpe Adria motorcycle road racing championship’s first race of 2014.

After what will be fourteen years of involvement, Bridgestone will end its MotoGP tyre supply at the end of the 2015 season. Series organiser Dorna has agreed to extend Bridgestone’s current supply contract, which was due to expire after the current season, for one year, and the company says this will then be its final season as tyre supplier. As was the case when it reported in 2009 its intention to wrap up supply to Formula One, the tyre maker links its decision to cease MotoGP supply to a fulfillment of the objectives it set out for itself in the championship.

The tyre brand has competed in all but two years of the championship since its first in 1907. Team Aerokit Nexen’s 14-year-old debutant Jack Shanahan has claimed victory in the super-pro class of the Maxxis Tyres British Drift Championship’s opening round at Lydden Hill. Shanahan became the youngest ever competitor in the BDC, and his victory was registered against 90 other drivers representing 40 teams.
