Motorsport RFID tyre tags: Sumitomo Rubber Industries partners with Avery Dennison
Sumitomo Rubber Industries Motorsport Department has selected Avery Dennison’s AD Maxdura tyre tag for use by endurance racing teams on Falken tyres. Teams will benefit from new data to help them prepare and improve race performance. With a unique RFID transponder implanted in each tyre, information can be read automatically and used to identify precisely which tyres are in use from the pit to the track. To further boost control, as well as stock and performance management, the Avery Dennison Maxdura Tire Tag enables teams to optimize real-time inventory and logistics. In addition, providing a unique ID for each tyre is intended to “improve reuse and recycling processes after the race to make events more environmentally sustainable.”

Davanti Tyres has launched its first semi-slick track tyre, the Protoura Race. The tyre, designed to offer the power and handling to achieve podium results, was tested at Applus IDIADA and Calafat Circuit in Spain, as well as at the UK’s Formula One host circuit, Silverstone. Its features include a directional tread pattern for superior wet control, enhanced carcass strength for more driver feedback and control under high cornering forces experienced on race tracks; a new compound to provide the grip required for faster acceleration and harder braking; and a road-legal, semi-slick tread design to allow amateur racers to drive to and from the track. Davanti adds that the tyre will be available in sizes between 13” and 18”.

Alongside its real-world motorsport efforts in the 2023 NLS championship, the Falken racing programme is about to step up a gear following its acceptance into the 2023/24 24H Series Esports championship. Falken sim racers finished fourth overall when participating in a ‘pre-qualifying’ session for the championshi, clearing the official Falken’s Esports team to field a GT3 car in the six-round online racing series, which gets underway with the virtual Spa Francorchamps on 1 October.

MXGP riders on Dunlop tyres continued their run of success in 2023 with victories in MXGP, MX2 and WMX at Arnhem in The Netherlands. Romain Febvre took his sixth overall FIM Motocross World Championship victory of the season with a second and first place finish in the two Sunday races. Over the weekend, riders used Dunlop’s latest Geomax MX34 front and Geomax MX14 rear tyre to handle the soft, sandy surface of the Arnhem track. Dunlop works with some of the fastest motocross riders to develop the next generation of motocross tyres. Wim Van Achter, motorsport manager, Dunlop, said the riders’ success “demonstrates the performance and quality of Dunlop’s motocross range.”

Hankook will showcase its iON range of specialist electric vehicle tyres at the London EV Show (28-30 November, ExCel London, Stand number ES11). The London EV Show is the largest international trade show and conference focused on the electric vehicle industry in Europe. Hankook launched the iON range in 2022, tyres with a technological emphasis on EVs leading to reduced rolling resistance, low noise, and high resilience. This means that compared to conventional tyres, the tyres offer increased range per battery charge. Two Goodyear associates based in Luxembourg have been killed in a vehicle incident at the Nürburgring on 9 August. Tyrepress understands from test industry sources that 39-year-old driver Christian Franck, a popular member of the tyre testing community and title-winning motorsport driver from Luxembourg, is one of the deceased. Goodyear told Tyrepress that it is assisting local authorities with their investigation into the incident. Goodyear representatives added that the company is “deeply saddened” that its associates had lost their lives and that its “immediate concern” is for the family, friends, and colleagues of its associates.

The FIA, World Rally Championship promoter and Pirelli are discussing the opportunity to make more diverse and challenging race strategies by enforcing the use of option tyres in future rallies. The tyre supplier revealed the plan following a Rally Finland won by British driver Elfyn Evans after a dramatic Friday in which many pre-rally favourites were eliminated. Pirelli said its Scorpion soft tyres performed reliably well, with all drivers (except Teemu Suninen on Sunday morning) using identical strategies to capitalise on its strength versus the option tyre.
