Dunlop says it is optimistic for its teams’ chances in the third round of the FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC), and the manufacturer has good reason for this sunny outlook. In the 2013 meeting at Oschersleben Dunlop experienced success in both EWC and Superstock classes. The Suzuki Endurance Racing Team converted pole into victory, while the works Honda squad also showed great pace with a recovery from a fuel issue and R2CL set the second fastest lap of the race.

The manufacturer said that success at the 2014 Isle of Man TT, as well as the desire to underline the tyre manufacturer’s commitment to motorsport had informed the decision. A month from now, 40 electric racing cars will line up on the grid at the inaugural Formula E Championship race in Beijing. Each of the tyres that take to the track on 13 September will be fitted with identical tyres that were specifically developed for the competition. In a Michelin-hosted Q&A session, the company’s motorsport director Pascal Couasnon explains that the decision that all cars should run on Pilot Sport EV tyres was not simply a strategic option in technology terms; he says it was also an obvious choice.

After extending its partnership with NASCAR Group company the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA), Continental Tire the Americas will continue as official tyre of the Tudor United SportsCar Championship and exclusive tyre supplier and sponsor to several event classes. The company will also remain entitlement sponsor and exclusive tyre supplier to the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. All up, Continental says it will continue as the ‘official tyre of IMSA’ through to 2018.

Give an inch, and Pirelli will make its F1 tyres even larger. In the video it released to introduce the 18-inch size it later tested at Silverstone, Pirelli stated that “the new 18-inch tyre represents a starting point for future evolution. This technology could lead to even bigger sizes in years to come.” Crash.net suggests that we may not have too many years to wait for even larger F1 tyres, and says words to this effect come from no less an authority than Paul Hembery.

Drive DMACK World Rally Team crew Ott Tänak and Raigo Molder won an emphatic and popular home victory at Rally Estonia – a round of the FIA European Rally Championship. Tänak has hit a run of good form for the Drive DMACK team, having previously claimed 25 WRC2 points in Poland.

The championship was claimed at Loket in the Czech Republic, with Fontanesi winning the first moto and finishing third in race two on her Yamaha, fitted with tyre supplier, Dunlop’s Geomax MX32 front and MX52.

Dunlop Motorsport has used the Moto 2 and 3 mid-season break to examine the changes brought about by its 2014 tyre philosophy. The manufacturer’s 2013 rubber provided more opportunities for riders to make choices about the tyres that suited them best at a particular circuit, Dunlop’s tyre selections this year have led to very little variation in the top riders’ decisions. Clinton Howe, Dunlop’s operations manager, Motorcycle Grand Prix, explains that the manufacturer has been able to develop tyres that are harder – and therefore last longer – and more versatile without compromising on pace.
