A condition Michelin says must be fulfilled before it considers a return to Formula 1 tyre supply is the change from the 13-inch tyres now used to an 18-inch size. Therefore, the decision made by the tyre maker and Renault Sport Technologies to evaluate the use of 18-inch tyres in the Formula Renault 3.5 championship – a series it views as a “springboard for drivers looking to reach Formula 1” – could be viewed as Michelin taking a step closer towards picking up where it left off in 2006. The two parties are also looking into using 17-inch tyres in the Formula Renault 2.0 championship.

Pirelli will bring its softest tyre compounds yet to the Circuit of the Americas in Texas when it hosts its third Formula One grand prix. The soft compound replaces the hard, with the medium present in both 2012 and 2013. The compounds are designed to cope with the varying demands of the track, which takes in three long straights, but also a number of more technical corners.

Pirelli has announced its title sponsorship of the Offroad British Masters Series in 2015. Run by Offroad Motorsport UK, the Pirelli British Masters Series will be run over six rounds at some of the UK’s top motocross circuits, including Foxhills and HawkstonePark. The manufacturer said it would enhance the availability of rider tuition and prizes for competitors as part of the deal.

Appearing at five rounds of the FIA World Rally Championship, the series, designed as a cost-effective way into top level rallying, proved popular after being oversubscribed at the start of 2014.

This year’s DTM season came to an end over the weekend, and the series organiser concedes that fans “weren’t 100 per cent satisfied” with the touring car championship in 2014. The first half of the season was a particular concern and Hans Werner Aufrecht, chairman of DTM rights holder and promoter, ITR e.V, says a number of measures will be introduced to add more pep to DTM races. One step that has already been decided upon is dropping the option tyre in 2015.

As part of its association with the World Series by Renault (WSR), Michelin will supply Renault Sport its Pilot Sport S9L for the new Renault Sport R.S. 01. Michelin will provide the tyre in two sizes, 30-68x18 for the front wheels and 31-71x18 for the rear. The company says the decision to fit an 18-inch tyre is in line with its desire to see as many parallels as possible between racing and road tyres, an arrangement that enables new technologies developed for motorsport to be more swiftly carried over to road tyres.

A brand new tyre allocation will be introduced for the 2014 Australian Grand Prix, including a newly-developed asymmetric front slick tyre. Bridgestone says the front slick it is making available for this weekend’s event at Philip Island is a soft specification tyre that uses Bridgestone’s soft rubber compound in the left shoulder while an extra-soft rubber compound is used in the lesser-used right shoulder in order to offer superior warm-up potential. The asymmetric front slick is being offered as part of Bridgestone’s standard front tyre allocation, with the other two front tyre options in the allocation being conventional, symmetric slick tyres.

When a Mosler MT900R race car run by Staffordshire University Race Team suffered damage to the rear chassis and exhaust system, a replacement OEM exhaust could not be supplied in time for the next race. After the initial setback the team approached the Klarius R&D department to see if it could help. They were amazed to discover that Klarius could design, manufacture and test a bespoke system, ready for delivery, in under 24 hours.
