Toyo releases new R888R UHP road and track tyre in UK
Japanese tyre manufacturer Toyo Tires has announced the UK launch of its road-legal track tyre, the Proxes R888R. The tyre will be displayed at Autosport International, which begins tomorrow (8 January 2015). The tyre previously made its global debut at the Essen Motorshow in November.

The brand, manufactured by Qingdao’s Sentury Tire and distributed in the UK by Grouptyre member Oak Tyres, will communicate with visitors about the depth and breadth of its range, with high performance, ultra high performance, and SUV fitments. The manufacturer, founded in 2009, has been moving to differentiate itself in a populous field of Chinese tyre brands selling into the UK. At the beginning of December it stated that it would offer tyres for magazine testing to prove the quality of its products, having presented some eye-catching European tyre labels at its Reifen debut.

Pirelli’s motorsport director reports that changes to its Formula One tyres, particularly the soft tyre, led to increased possibilities for different race strategies in the 2014 F1 season. This year’s tyres, Paul Hembery explains, were a departure from those supplied to teams between 2011 and 2013: “After three years of making tyres that feature deliberate degradation, in accordance with our brief, this year’s revolutionary new rules with turbocharging and increased torque prompted the need for more consistent and predictable tyres, leading to the same average number of pit stops per race (2 or 3).” The average total pit stops seen in a race during the 2014 season was 44, seven less than in the previous season.

The Bloodhound Project, an ambitious British bid to set a new world land speed record in a supersonic car, has received a power boost from Atlas Copco UK. The company has supplied a range of workshop compressors and air tools to the Bloodhound Technical Centre in Bristol and its associated test facility at Newquay Aerohub. The equipment will play a pivotal role in the development of the Bloodhound Supersonic Car, the jet engine and rocket powered racing car, as the team prepares for an attempt to set a new 1,000mph world land speed record in 2016.

General Tire will continue as official tyre of the Jeepspeed Desert Race Series after negotiating a new multi-year sponsorship deal. The Continental brand has served as official tyre to the series since 2008 and supplies its Grabber tyre to participating teams. It says the partnership “has allowed Jeepspeed to offer its competitors affordable racing within the Best in the Desert (BITD) Series, where budget-conscious racers can compete on the same race courses as the pros.” All Jeepspeed competition vehicles are fitted with Grabber tyres, in either 33 or 35-rim diameter. General Tire points out that the very same specification tyres are sold to the public.

Yokohama-shod cars won the championships in the JN1, JN2, JN4, JN5 and JN6 classes. The performance of the victorious cars was firmly based on the superior performance on gravel of Yokohama’s “Advan A053” rally tyres as well as the excellent stability of the “Advan A050” sports tyre on tarmac courses.

The tyres Pirelli will supply to Formula One teams in 2015 were given their first official airing at the final in-season F1 test of the year, which was held straight after the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Although there were no dedicated Pirelli test days and each team concentrated on its own independent programme, all teams tested the new tyres during the two-day test period, having each received ten sets of the new 2015 tyres in place of the existing 2014 allocation. Pirelli, which brought its definitive specification medium, soft and supersoft 2015 tyres to Abu Dhabi, views the new rubber as an evolution of the existing tyre rather than a new departure.
