5 more years – Continental renews Hannover 96 football partnership
Continental has extended its longstanding partnership with football club Hannover 96. The new contract runs for five years, starting with the 2023/2024 season, and is independent of the club’s league affiliation. Hannover 96 currently plays in Germany’s second division 2. Bundesliga.

During the second quarter of 2023 exports of Spanish automotive equipment and components rose +7.6 per cent year-on-year, totalling 8,049 million euros. Between May and August, EU27 countries represented the biggest export grouping, amounting to a 67.1 per cent share of global export figures. The value of exports to EU countries rose +11.4 per cent in the period, reaching €5,400 million.

Sentury Tire North America is recalling “a batch of passenger car tyres produced during Week 17 Year 2023” due to an issue which affects “the proper curing of the tyre’s tread base layer.” The recall relates to 16 SKUs across 12 different sizes and 10 brands. Overall, the US National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 8900 tyres are potentially affected.

Those of us living in countries that have experienced extensive deindustrialisation may be able to commiserate with workers in Germany’s tyre plants, including the many who have received unsettling news of late. Michael Berthel, chief economist of the German Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (WdK), recently commented that “the situation is not entirely healthy” – and this may be an understatement. Berthel believes an uncertain future awaits more than half of Germany’s tyre manufacturing locations.

WMG at the University of Warwick in Coventry and Canada’s University of Victoria are the joint recipients of the inaugural Synthos Rubber Circularity Award, an international competition launched earlier this year to encourage cutting-edge ideas and solutions that significantly improve the environmental performance of synthetic rubber-based tyre compounds. Announcing the winners, Synthos states that the researchers impressed with their “breakthrough technology research concept” but did not elaborate on their work.
