Tesla Cybertruck spare tyres made by Goodyear
Tesla’s Cybertruck is back in the headlines. Elon Musk’s decision to repeat the now infamous Cybertruck armoured glass demonstration paired with the Cybertruck’s infinitely more impressive drag race win against a Porsche 911 – while towing a 911 – has ensured that much. But which tyres are carrying all that load and handling all that torque? Back in 2019, we broke the news that Goodyear was supplying tyres for the Tesla Cybertruck, but is that still the case and if so, which factory is supplying some of the highest of high-torque-high-load tyres?

Symbio, Michelin’s equally owned joint venture with automotive supplier Forvia and vehicle manufacturer Stellantis, has inaugurated its SymphonHy facility today. Located in Saint-Fons, within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France, the site houses Symbio’s headquarters, a production plant, an innovation hub and the Symbio Hydrogen Academy.

The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently released its 2023 Green Manufacturing List, and Prinx Chengshan (Shandong) Tire Co. Ltd. was once again awarded the national-level Green Factory title. Prinx Chengshan was awarded the first batch of National Green Factories in China in 2017. The company reports that it has successively won the national Green Supply Chain Management Enterprise and Industrial Product Green Design Demonstration Enterprise titles and has participated in several national standards related to the intelligent manufacturing of green tyres in China.

Andy Hamilton, currently chief executive officer of LKQ UK & Ireland, is to become senior vice president of LKQ as well as president and executive managing director of LKQ Europe from 1 January 2024. The news follows the announcement last week that Justin Jude was to succeed Dominick Zarcone as president and CEO of LKQ Corporation on 1 July 2024.

The machinery manufacturer says the move from smaller premises to the high-tech facility reflects its “commitment to support the industry in this increasingly important region.” The new service centre will serve the growing needs of VMI customers in the entire Southeast Asian region.

Recently, Cheng Shin Rubber held a third-quarter briefing meeting. As of September 30, 2023, the company can produce 23,000 all-steel radial tyres and 179,000 semi-steel radial tyres per day. From January to September, the tyre manufacturer’s revenue and net profit were approximately NT$73.5 billion (about £1.85 billion; €2.16 billion) and NT$5.6 billion (about £140 million; €160 million).

And the industry is projected to be valued at $31.61 billion by the end of 2023, both figures according to a recently published Future Market Insights report. In addition, the global market for AEB systems will likely expand at an 8 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the course of the next decade, with a projected value of $68.25 billion by 2033.

The former Continental tyre factory in Kaluga, Russia is taking on the Gislaved name and will operate under the management of Cordiant Joint Stock Company. Of the three brands the previous owner produced within the Kaluga plant, Gislaved is the only one for which S8 Capital gained usage rights when acquiring Continental’s Russian assets.

TMD Friction and Hella have agreed to transfer the 50 per cent share currently held by TMD Friction in the brake joint venture Hella Pagid to Hella. Hella will thus become the sole shareholder of Hella Pagid. Founded in 2013, Hella Pagid, a joint venture between automotive supplier Hella and brake friction manufacturer TMD Friction, sells brake components and accessories on the global automotive aftermarket. The purchase price has not been disclosed.

Linglong reports that it is “conducting on-site inspection, analysis and comparison of the third overseas base”, according to a statement released to institutional investors. However, behind the headline-grabbing references to a new further overseas factory which may well be in “the Americas”, Tyrepress China noticed that the tyre manufacturer revealed multiple details about progress with the Serbian factory. Specifically, Linglong said: “Many customers are looking forward to supplies from Serbia and are pressing for them. The company will speed up the construction progress in Serbia”.

Kumho Tire and synthetic rubber manufacturer Synthos have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the joint development of sustainable tyre raw materials. Under the MOU, the two companies will conduct a joint research and development project for Neodymium-Butadiene rubber using Bio-Butadiene and expand the use of environmentally friendly synthetic rubber in tyre manufacturing.
