P K Mohamed, chief advisor, R&D, Apollo Tyres Ltd has been lauded as ‘Sustainability Professional of the Year’ at the 10th edition of the World Sustainability Leadership Awards 2023. The accolade was conferred upon Mr Mohamed at a gala event held recently in Mauritius.

Sailun Group is partnering to build a new factory in Mexico. Through its wholly owned subsidiary Sailun International Holding (Singapore) Pte. Ltd., the Chinese firm signed a joint venture agreement with TD International Holding and Sapide CV (TD Mexico) on 15 December. The partners will build a facility capable of producing 6 million semi-steel radial tyres annually and are also considering the future establishment of capacity to produce 1.65 million all-steel radials a year.

The Automobile Club de France has named the Pirelli P Zero E ‘Tyre of the Year’ at the 2023 Automobile Awards. A jury of 20 men and women selected the Pirelli tyre for its performance, innovation, and sustainable development. Alejandro Recasens, Pirelli’s West Europe managing director, accepted the award on behalf of the tyre maker.

Groundworks were visibly underway in October 2023, but construction of the new Sentury factory, the first tyre manufacturing plant in Morocco in more than 25 years, will start in the first quarter of 2024. Indeed, Tyres & Accessories has seen a video depicting Sentury chairman Qin Long on-site in Morocco observing progress with the project.

Falken Tyres will partner the Mens European Mens Handball Championship (EHF EURO 2024) for the second successive year. The 65-match competition takes place on 10-28 January in six venues across Germany – the first time the country has hosted the competition. Handball enjoys great popularity in continental Europe, where Falken will capitalise on the prominence brought by naming rights as an official partner of the top-level competition. The tyre manufacturer is also running a competition online to win two pairs of VIP hospitality tickets to the 22 January round at Cologne’s Lanxess Arena.

Nokian Heavy Tyres has entered into a “new era of cooperation” with German retreader RuLa-BRW, which will use the tyre maker’s “innovative Noktop retreading material” in its pre-cure retreading process and offer these tyres to customers in the German market. In addition, RuLa-BRW states that it agreed upon a “strategic cooperation” yesterday during a meeting with representatives from local subsidiary Nokian Tyres GmbH.

A project led by a ZC Rubber recycling subsidiary has won the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation’s (CPCIF) first prize in technological advancement. Zhongce Rubber Recycling Technology’s ‘Demonstration Project of Waste Rubber Recycle & Application Technology’ was completed in collaboration with Beijing University of Chemical Technology and Nanjing Green Gold Giant Rubber & Plastic Advanced Technology Co, Ltd. ZC Rubber is the first company in the Chinese tyre industry to receive this honour.

Nokian Tyres has extended the availability of its Intuitu smart tyres to the Spanish market, following their launch in Finland and France. The product is designed to bring digital transformation to farming, agricultural and municipal contracting tyres, making a fleet’s vital tyre data available on a smartphone. The plug-and-play product was released in 2020; Intuitu tyres have sensors mounted on the inner lining, which send pressure and temperature readings directly to the driver’s smartphone via a downloadable app.

Honourees were selected based on the impact on the customer experience, the novelty of the technology and potential scale within Stellantis. The company said its Venture Awards demonstrate its attitude to customer-focused technology and its “Dare Forward 2030” ambition for global clean, safe and affordable mobility. Ned Curic, Stellantis chief engineering and technology officer, said the awards “recognise the fresh, creative perspectives of innovative startups that help us deliver useful, cutting-edge features.”

Giti Tire will continue its support for European ice hockey into 2024. The manufacturer’s GT Radial brand will continue to be associated with the Champions Hockey League (CHL) as official tyre partner, and with top-flight Czech Republic team, BK Mladá Boleslav, for the 2023/24 season. Giti European marketing director Stefan Brohs said the company’s “marketing metrics show an increase in European brand awareness through our ice hockey partnerships.”

Machinery manufacturer Mesnac reports that its Mesnac European Research and Technical Centre (MERTC) recently “achieved a significant milestone” by becoming a member of the European Committee for Standardization’s (CEN) Tyre Curing Presses working group. According to the company, this membership not only “highlights the fruitful partnership between the Chinese and Slovak teams” at MERTC but also positions the Slovakia-based operation as “a contributor to the standard-setting process.”
