Overseas purchases, plant on JK Tyre agenda
Could JK Tyre & Industries be the next Indian tyre maker to broaden its geographic footprint? Speaking with The Economic Times, company chairman and managing director Dr. Raghupati Singhania said that following the integration of Mexican tyre maker Tornel into the company, JK Tyres has “encountered some interesting propositions for possible opportunities of acquisition to catapult into a global entity.”

Latin Expo Group LLC, the event organiser behind the Latin Tyre Expo, have announced plans to hold the 2014 Latin Auto Parts Expo between 9 and 11 July 2014 at the Atlapa Convention Center, Panama City, Panama. The exhibition it pitched at providing manufacturers and distributors direct access to the Latin American and Caribbean OEM, replacement parts and tuning markets in a warm and personal setting that forges long lasting commercial and personal relationships.

Brisa Bridgestone Sabancı Lastik Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. (Brisa), the joint venture company run by Bridgestone Corporation and Turkey’s Sabancı Holding, is evaluating potential sites within the country for a second factory. Brisa intends to construct a passenger car radial factory to complement the company’s existing passenger car, bus and truck radial plant in İzmit, which entered volume production in 1990.

The 11th edition of the China International Tire Expo, held earlier this month in Shanghai, attracted 7,303 visitors. This number represents a slight rise in attendance over 2012, and organiser Reliable International Exhibition Services says that 4,263 visitors, or 58 per cent of the total, came from outside China. The 24,000 square metre exhibition space housed 335 exhibitors, ten per cent more than last year.

The official opening for Hankook Tire’s new plant in Indonesia was held on 17 September. The facility in Lippo Cikarang, West Java – the South Korean tyre maker’s seventh global plant – was inaugurated in the presence of top Hankook executives, including Hankook Tire vice-chairman and CEO Seung Hwa Suh, Hankook Tire Worldwide president and CEO Hyun Shick Cho, and Hankook Tire CMO/CCMO Hyun Bum Cho. Also in attendance was Indonesian president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and several other Indonesian government officials.

Despite the dangers involved, texting while driving is perfectly legal in at least ten US states. Yet the practice has many opponents, including Goodyear Tire & Rubber, who today is sending out the blimps to spread an anti- texting and driving message. The messages carried by the three Goodyear blimps today promote ‘It Can Wait’, a US-wide education and awareness campaign encouraging drivers never to text while behind the wheel.

Michelin has been awarded ISO 9001:2008 certification for its Tyreplus and Michelin Truck Service Centre (MTSC) networks across India. With this certification, Michelin becomes the largest certified tyre service network in the country; the company presently operates 23 Tyreplus and 13 MTSC outlets within India.

German-based Pirelli company Pneumobil GmbH has established its first flagship ‘Driver’ centre. The Driver store in Frankfurt opened its doors on Friday 13 September, and this will hopefully prove a lucky date for the new premium concept. Pirelli intends to expand the Driver network, however it has not outlined its future rollout plans or indicated whether the Driver centre concept will be extended to other markets.

In April the airless tyre won a Silver Edison Award and now it has been named one of the 2013 contractors’ top 40 new products by publication Equipment Today.

Pneumobil, the retail operation run by Pirelli in Germany, has acquired Bavarian tyre retailer Reifen-Wagner I.S. Auto-Service GmbH & Co. KG. The purchase of this chain adds 15 new outlets to the 70-strong Pneumobil network; the deal will take affect on 1 October.

The fact that import tariffs and labelling laws are coming and going in the midst of this means things are far from simple. All-steel truck radial tyre manufacturer Dynacargo began exporting to the United States earlier this year. According to online news reports, Dynacargo (a member company of Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum (Group) Co., Ltd.-Kaidi Xixiang Company) has gained permission from Shaanxi Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau to export to the North American market.

Triangle Tire representatives have denied online reports that the company is planning to invest in a Russian tyre production facility any time soon. Following online reports which surfaced in August, Tyres & Accessories contacted the company and its UK importer TYM International. According to TYM managing director Steve Eke, there were talks with Russian government officials along these lines last year, but at the start of 2013 the decision was taken not to follow these through any further.
