ZC Rubber chairman cautiously optimistic about China’s tyre industry
On 27 March 2024, Shen Jinrong, chairman of ZC Rubber, expressed a cautiously optimistic attitude towards the Chinese tyre industry at the 2024 China Rubber Conference, commenting: “For the Chinese tyre industry, the phenomenon of multiple positive factors coexisting at the same time is unlikely to reappear in 2024. Most of the positive factors will turn negative or slow down or decrease, and the tyre industry cycle has reached a high point. The contradiction of overcapacity in the industry will become increasingly prominent, and we should take measures to deal with it.”

Electric vehicle (EV) owners are reporting faster tyre wear rates than they experience on internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. And that’s leading to a widening satisfaction gap between original equipment tyres and electric vehicles (EVs) and ICEs, according to the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Study, released at the end of March. The study shows that EV owners have similar expectations of tyre wear as do owners of ICEs, despite EV tyres wearing faster due to greater vehicle weight and higher torque.

Retreading supplier, Kraiburg Austria has been awarded the Kununu Top Company seal again in 2024 after also doing so in 2023. The seal recognises companies with high employee satisfaction and is awarded exclusively based on independent reviews on Kununu. Kununu means blank slate in Swahili and, according to the operators, stands for all companies that have not yet been rated. The platform, which was founded in Vienna, has been online since 2007 and currently employs around 130 people in Vienna, Porto, Berlin and Hamburg.

Reporting the official groundbreaking of a Collaborative Innovation Center at the company’s Cataroux site in France yesterday, the Michelin Group says the ceremony “marks a major milestone” in this innovation-focused project, which it considers the only one of its kind in Europe. Michelin and four other entities have spearheaded the project since 2020, investing 61 million euros in a facility that will serve as a nexus for business and innovation stakeholders.

On 20 February 2024, 73 industry leaders from nearly 20 industrial sectors signed the ‘The Antwerp Declaration for a European Industrial Deal’. Many more have signed since then, including the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA). The ETRMA thus joins over 900 organisations across 25 sectors asking for industry and industrial policy to be at the core of the new European Strategic Agenda for 2024-2029.

At the end of March, tyre manufacturer Qingdao Doublestar suspended trading on the stock exchange and announced that it was preparing to officially take control of Kumho and resolve competition in the industry. Doublestar said it will disclose further information before April 11.

At the end of March, The Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. confirmed that it is supplying its Advan Sport V107 tyres as original equipment (OE) for the new Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4Matic+ Coupé, which was presented in December 2023. The Coupé is being fitted with 265/40ZR19 (102Y) tyres on the front axle and 295/35ZR19 (104Y) tyres on the rear axle.
