Work has officially begun on the passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyre factory Goodyear Tire & Rubber is setting up to satisfy anticipated demand within the Americas. A groundreaking ceremony was held at the San Luis Potosi site in Mexico yesterday.

Yokohama Rubber has confirmed its participation in the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show 2015, which will take place in the Jakarta ‘new town’ of Bumi Serpong Damai between 20 and 30 August 2015. The tyre maker will be represented by its local sales agent, PT YHI Indonesia, and will display its consumer tyre portfolio. A panel of players from Chelsea FC will also appear at the Yokohama booth during the show to promote the company’s partnership with the Premier League football club.

Specialty chemical company Evonik Industries has inaugurated a new facility in North America, its Richmond Business and Innovation Center. Along with other company executives and local, regional and state dignitaries, Evonik Industries’ executive board chairman Dr. Klaus Engel cut the ribbon for the new US$15.4 million facility on 21 July. With the new facility, Evonik more than doubles its laboratory and commercial space in the Greater Richmond area, and is expected to add 50 jobs there over the next five years.

Marangoni Retreading Systems reports the installation of a new Ringbuilder 3003 at the plant operated by Reifen Müller GmbH, one of Europe’s largest retreaders. The long-time Marangoni partner was the first European retreader to use the Ringbuilder technology, and this additional machine gives the Reifen Müller facility in Germany the capacity to turn out a further 200 tyres every eight hour shift.

Michelin North America has celebrated half a century of partnership with the retailer it says has not only sold more Michelin tyres than any other, but also introduced the radial tyre into the USA. Department store chain Sears signed an agreement with Michelin in 1965 to sell Michelin radials under the Allstate trademark, a deal that kicked off a collaboration that has now seen more than 135 million tyres sold through Sears outlets.

The European Commission has approved regional investment of almost €117million for the passenger car tyre factory Nexen Tire intends to build in the Czech Republic. The Commission found the aid that government trade agency CzechInvest offered Nexen for the facility in Žatec is compatible with EU state aid rules, and deemed it will promote regional development without unduly distorting competition in the internal market.

In short, the performance of the two-wheel sector appears to be somewhere between the relative success of car and truck tyres, but not as bad as the declining agricultural tyre figures of the first report.

Continental AG has announced what it is calling a voluntary tyre exchange programme (as opposed to a recall) of approximately 12,000 truck tyres. The tyre in question is a 205/75R17.5 Conti Hybrid LS3, produced from calendar week 27 in 2014 to calendar week 26 in 2015. The product was mainly sold to original equipment manufacturers in Europe and – to a lesser degree – into the replacement market. Continental stressed that there have been no reports of accidents or injuries.

Visitor numbers at this year’s Tyrexpo India are 54 per cent up over those for the previous show, reports organiser SingEx Exhibitions Pte Ltd. During the three-day event a total of 2,600 industry specialists from 30 countries passed through the gates at the Chennai Trade Centre to visit the more than 100 confirmed trade exhibitors and to attend scheduled programmes such as TyreTalk. Prior to the show, the organiser stated its expectation of around 2,500 visitors at Tyrexpo India 2015.
