Subsidies no remedy for low rubber prices – Onkar Kanwar
Falling natural rubber prices have driven output in India down, and many anticipate that tapping of natural rubber will soon reach its lowest point in almost two decades. Last month the state of Kerala announced an Rs 150 (£1.51) per kilogramme subsidy to help small-scale producers, however Onkar Kanwar believes that subsidy programme such as this can only be of limited help.

Lassa Tyres has signed a an endorsement agreement with Barcelona midfielder and Turkish National Football Team captain Arda Turan on a two-year contract. The news follows the earlier partnership agreement between FC Barcelona and Lassa making Lassa the main partner of all the indoor sports (which includes basketball, handball, futsal and roller hockey teams) as well as official partner of the Football Club for the next four seasons until 30 June 2019.

The the economic situation in Russia and the CIS countries has led to a downgrade in Nokian Tyres’ 2015 outlook. The Finnish tyre maker says sales of passenger car tyres have continued to decline in this region, and those tyres being purchased within the Russian market are increasingly lower B or C segment brand products. The company’s own sales in Russia were down 39.1 per cent year-on-year during the first half of 2015.

South Korea’s tyre market has long been dominated by domestic manufacturers Hankook, Kumho and Nexen, but the country’s ‘big three’ are losing ground to imports at both the premium and budget ends of the market. According to information released by the Korea Tire Manufacturers Association yesterday, imports of tyres increased 9.9 per cent year-on-year in the first six months of 2015, and totalled 3.73 million units.

The latest quarter figures for JK Tyre & Industries were released along with a challenge for India’s government to impose tariffs upon tyres imported from China. Company chairman and managing director Dr Raghupati Singhania stated on 4 August that the “menace” posed by the “dumping of Chinese tyres” continues “unabated”. He added that “urgent steps are required to impose [an] anti-dumping duty to ensure a level playing field in the marketplace.”

As a result, the pre-announced mandatory tender offer for the remaining shares (at 15 euros each) will be triggered.

The US-based company has taken exception to the life and deeds of ‘Super Tyre Guy’ and thrown its considerable weight behind erasing the tyre-themed superhero from existence. Super Tyre Guy is the character created by a New Zealand tyre shop trading under that name. Or rather he was, until a letter sent by DC Comics’ legal representative killed off Super Tyre Guy far more effectively than kryptonite could possibly dispatch his more famous – and trademarked – caped inspiration.

In the absence of legislation regarding the disposal of end of life tyres, New Zealand’s tyre importers, wholesalers and retailers are free to deal – or not deal – as they please with the more than 5 million tyres demounted from vehicles every year. According to estimates published by the Tyrewise project, some 70 per cent of these tyres end up in landfill. This is why Bridgestone considers the agreement it has signed to collect and recycle waste tyres from its stores throughout the country’s North Island “breakthrough”.

Earlier in the month tyrepress.com reported on a bill introduced into the United States Senate that could pave the way for implementation of minimum tyre standards – effectively a US tyre label – and also reintroduce compulsory tyre registration in the USA. Yesterday the Senate passed the bill containing these proposals by 65 votes to 34. The bill also authorised funds for other highway, safety and transit programmes.

Last year Michelin made news when it bought out the parent company of Germany’s largest wholesaler, Ihle Baden-Baden AG, and now the French tyre maker has increased its wholesale presence in Germany with the 100 per cent acquisition of Meyer Lissendorf, a wholesaler with a strong car tyre focus. Michelin has not disclosed the purchase price.

Production of Michelin truck and bus tyres in India will apparently increase by 45 per cent this year. Financial daily The Economic Times writes that annual output at the company’s plant north of Chennai will increase from 11,000 tonnes to 16,000 tonnes in 2015 in response to increasing demand for radial tyres.
